    I only played 1st gen. My brother got into in the 2nd gen.

    Although I'm tempted to emulate from black and white.

    No. All the remakes retcon a lot of the original games. For example in FR/LG you have the Seevi Islands, and in HGSS you have a whole new region in Johto to the west of Cianwood. There's also a lot of canon story retcon but I won't spoil in case you haven't played it yet.

    Also theres a lot of new features, updated engine with new gen moves/pokes/etc.

    I do recommend Black & White, it's probably the game that's closest to the original Gen 1 experience as long as you go into it blind. All the pokemon are original, you won't find any from previous gens until after E4. I messed it up at the time because I was so hyped, I went on serebii and memorized the whole pokedex and built a team before i even got the game. It focuses heavily on story though, and the story and themes differ quite a lot from the usual formula.

    Black & White 2 is considered the best games in the franchise to most die hard fans, and is also a must-play if you haven't yet. To understand everything you should definitely play the original Black & White first tho.

    But keep in mind: Any Pokemon games post Diamond & Pearl are known for being really unstable and hard to emulate. I suggest just buying a used DS Lite and then an R4 card if you don't want to buy all the individual games.
