It's one of the most enthusiastic reviews that I've read from him and definitely not the critical consensus. I wouldn't exactly call it obvious.

I honestly can't remember much about 2/3 of the James Gray pictures that I've seen prior to this one. Most of you guys seem to have a higher opinion of him than I do.

Carol was a decent character study-- reminiscent of The Hours and Haynes' own Far From Heaven. In fact, given the source material's reputation as a literary landmark for the genre, the film reminded me of Revolutionary Road, in a way. Both films are adaptations of groundbreaking stories, if limited by their own status. Strong acting, a bit Oscar baity.

edit: am interested about the raves on this? It's nowhere near Safe or FFH imo

A veil upon which reality is traced, augmented, and distorted just such that the uncanny is revealed, penetrating pyschological depth. Sokurov's iridescent cinematography as usual brings life to nature, rendering striking three dimensionality while conveying the mystic phenomenon of object breathing. Colour coursing and vignetting paired with natural phenomena: the mother and sons breath, the wind, the sunlight. A haunting portrayal of tenderness and grief, only slighted by its own intensity and psycho-sexual discomfort.

      95/100 - Amazing.

A haunting though befuddled sepia-toned short with Hitchcock-like motif, if only it end as mysteriously as it begin.

      78/100 - Very Good.

Propaganda or subversion thereof, a charged and poetic ambiguation of changing society: rise of bolshevism & science, lament of tradition & religion.

      93/100 - Amazing.
