The Mother and the whor- 1973
      ★★★★★ Watched 24 Nov, 2015

An incredible monologue performed by Francoise Lebrun rolls out this protracted observation of man's, woman's, and love's pluralities of forms. Love all the cinema references, especially Alexandre's love for a 'girl in a Bresson film' (aka Gilberte--Four Nights of a Dreamer). Undeniably sincere and uncompromisingly candid.

      96/100 - Masterful.

      ★★★★½ Watched 24 Nov, 2015

Sokurov charts the metaphysical space shared by art & life by poetically converging a painted tree with a present one.

      88/100 - Excellent.

Stylistically they're pretty far apart, but thematically and even on certain plot points... yes, they absolutely are similar.

I agree with your girlfriend. Youth is arrogant and pretentious.

Raised Mother and whor- to 98 cause I can't stop thinking about it.

    Creed was dope.

I hadn't seen a single Rocky film until a few months ago -- and now I've seen all. Creed is definitely its own thing, but is effective in its nod to the previous films of the franchise. The Rocky films are always so formulaic and cheesy, but it's always been so rewarding and fulfilling. Creed has a lot of that, but it's effective because you just buy into its formula.

It's fun seeing Ryan Coogler inject some of his filmmaking in a big studio film like this. Michael B. Jordan is great as well.

I finally saw Carol and will say that THE HYPE IS REAL

It's debatable whether this is a stronger film than Far From Heaven, but I would say that Carol's naturalism and slow-burn emotion resonated with me a lot more strongly than the prior film's self-conscious, melodramatic styling. Carol's deceptively simple forbidden love story lends the film a certain universal appeal, but its nuanced character and social dynamics are just as rich as its period detail and its textured mise en scene. It's the sort of film where every gesture and offhand remark is pregnant with meaning and the slightest of touches packs a wave of emotion. Immaculately crafted with two stellar performances, it's easily among the year's best.
