Brah you can't really blame someone taking that money. If that was offered to me I'd go play in Syria

Oh no I totally agree... He'd probably be dumb not to. Just laughing at what he was saying months ago is literally the exact opposite of what he ended up doing lol.

I think ppl have forgotten that the Sox have made the playoffs once since 2010 and while they have bad contracts(Hanley, Panda, Porcello) none of those go beyond 4 more years. From the World Series year they've let Lester walk and traded Lackey(their 1 and 2) while trying to replace them with bums.

Nah but that's what it was gonna take for him to come to Boston. I'd rather that then pay Cueto.

I don't get the money argument, it doesn't come out of my pocket and getting elite pitching without giving up something doesn't present itself very often. He's also not injury prone.

Except it's not elite when it really counts, the postseason.

because then you have less money to spend on other players. Lets say he has 3 great years then falls off hard. Now you've got this scrub that you can't replace because your team has no money. Sabathia is a good example. Guy was a work horse for a few years and has been s--- the last 3 years and he has two more on his contract. No one's worth that unless they're a young player like Mike Trout/Harper. But then you also have to worry about injuries. It's just risky

That's not something that can't be changed though. He had a few good starts this year before he melted down since they didn't know when to pull him. The whole point of signing him is to get the team to the postseason in the first place.

They still have plenty of options for moving pieces and there's no luxury cap so in theory they can spent billions if they want to. If he falls off there's always a team desperate enough to take him and if he does great he can opt out after 3 years and some other team can pay for his post-prime years.

Yeah but this isn't a video game where you put in a code and get billions to spend lol. There's no salary cap but there is a certain amount of money teams have to spend, not to mention the luxury tax if your teams payroll is over 189 mil

hey they can spend whatever they want, it doesn't effect me, this was their best shot at getting an ace and they took it. I'm just glad I don't have to listen to them talk to me like I'm an idiot and tell me Clay Buchholz is an ace

It would be risky if the Sox didn't have one of the best young teams in baseball. They were missing an ace and a closer. They now have both.

Keith Law and most of the prospect ranking guys had them as the #1 or #2 minor league systems in baseball. After the Kimbrel trade they've probably slipped a spot or 2 but are still top 5. And that's not talking about the guys in Boston right now(Bogaerts, Betts, Swihart, Bradley, Castillo, Rodriguez, Owens, Shaw etc). Guys like Moncada, Espinoza(17 year old kid who has touched 100), Devers and Benintendi can go up against anybody's 4 top prospects in baseball.

If Price falls off hard in 3 years it's not the end of the world. Hanley is gone after 18'(so is Kimbrel)and Porcello/Sandoval are gone after 19'. That's a little more the $74 M a year. Next year Ortiz and Uehara will come off the books, that's about $23 Million. Sox will probably pick up Buchholz's option next year so after 17' him and Craig come off the books(another $24 million).

There are no long drawn out contracts on the Sox except Price, Pedroia and Castillo. They won't be handicapped when they look to resign their homegrown guys or other players in free agency.

I was under the impression that the mentality for a lot of the AL East teams is World Series or bust. Just don't think Price will get them there. Not as an ace. They have one of the league's highest payrolls, I don't think Price was the answer. Oh well, time will tell.

They didn't have any better choice though and desperately needed an ace

Price will get them to the playoffs where this team has a history of showing up. I also don't think it is written in stone that he won't succeed in the playoffs. Randy Johnson had a span in his career where he lost 7 straight post season starts, then he went on to dominate the Braves/Yankees and won a World Series.

The AL East is the toughest division to pitch in in all of baseball and it's not close, Price has done that and has a career 1.95 ERA at Fenway. If Price gets you there and lays another egg then you reassess. Maybe Eduardo Rodriguez is ready to step into that roll. But I'd rather flame out in the playoffs then sit here and listen to the Sox ownership tell us they have 5 aces(that legit happened last year).

2 years is a big difference and I really don't think he would be comfortable in Boston. Price is already proven against the AL East.
