Where is the so-called left’s outrage at, say, Chicago gun crime? Weren’t something like 3,000 people shot in 2017? Their answer to this, if they acknowledge the issue at all, is literally “muh white privilege!” You don’t want to talk about inner-city gun violence or cartel members because these issues overlap too much with the debate over the border and illegal immigration, and you’ve made it clear where you stand on that — but you’re worried about mass shootings. No, this is just another one of the left’s artificially constructed issues of importance. It’s moral panic nonsense. Democrats need to realize that gun control is not popular in the United States. It's a losing issue, just as gay marriage is a losing issue for Republicans.

There is no gun crime epidemic in this country generally speaking, and yes, ‘mass shootings’ absolutely falls under this header. They are no more common now than they were in the past. They’ve always happened and always will. Gun control won’t stop them; introducing a bunch of new hoops for people to jump through won’t work. Paddock passed several background checks. Nobody saw that guy coming. A mentally deranged teenager can just steal weapons from someone who has already acquired them legally. Or he can show up to school with a chainsaw. Or he can just poison everyone’s lunch. These kids need better mental health care, end of story. Eroding the constitution is not the answer. The First Amendment is already under constant attack by people who want to pass Germany-style anti-hate speech laws.

FBI was notified of the shooter’s suspect behavior but for some reason, protocol was not followed through with & the FBI office in Miami was not notified. Terrible....

I was also reading the shooter was apparently in a mental health facility for a bit. How tf was he able to legally purchase an AR-15 if it’s on record he was in a mental health facility?

Did he actually buy it legally? I read an article that said he did but the full article just talked about how he could have bought it legally. Was a statement ever made?

Immigrants commit less crimes than native born Americans. The guns are also mostly produced here.

How naive to think that popular opinion determines policy in this country lol. Politics is about wresting power from the opposition mate. I If gay marriage was largely disliked, I'd still argue for it.

    Antifactual claims

Speculation all around. Not any stronger than me saying more regulation will fix these problems.

I'm also in favor of universal healthcare. Too bad mandates are unconstitutional lol.

Yeah, he bought several firearms legally over the past year. I guess him being in a mental health facility didn’t pop up in any of the background checks which is ridiculous.

"Florida has a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases. But anyone without a felony record, domestic abuse conviction, or a handful of other exceptions — such as a commitment to a mental institution — can walk into a gun store, wait a few minutes to clear a background check, and walk out with an AR-15 -style rifle, magazines and ammunition.

Under federal law, you also must be 21 to buy a handgun from a firearms dealer. But 18-year-olds can buy semiautomatic rifles.

The AR-15 rifle used in the attack was purchased legally, at Sunrise Tactical Supply in Florida, according to a federal law enforcement official. “No laws were violated in the procurement of this weapon,” said Peter J. Forcelli, the special agent in charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Miami."

Pam Bondi is trying to do something about the age that these kids can buy guns.

There was an assault rifle ban between 1994 to 2004...

Columbine stands out as the one big school shooting during those years.

I don't dispute that. It just seems to me that the left never wants to talk about Chicago specifically with regard to gun violence, only within the context of white privilege and discrimination.
True, but Democrats aren't doing themselves any favors by continuing to use it as a wedge issue. This is one of many reasons they'll probably get crushed in the midterms.
Definitions of ‘mass shootings’ can vary considerably. The issue has become too politicized to be of much use for analysis. What matters is that gun crime is at a 50-year low. That is an ironclad objective fact.

Chicago has the 25th highest murder rate in the country.

r-----s want to talk about Chicago because they highlight every murder there on Foxnews since it has a Democratic goverment... it's actually doing something with gun control and Obama used to live there.

Most of the guns confiscated from Chicago shootings are legally bought from bordering states where it's easier to buy or stolen from legal gun holders. They're not going to Mexico and sneaking up guns to Chicago, they're getting them in this country

"According to the FBI, roughly 60% of guns used in crimes in Illinois were from out of state. The overwhelming number of those guns flow into Illinois from states that have much less restrictive gun laws. Most of those out of state guns came from Indiana, which is next to Illinois. Second place goes to Mississippi and third place goes to Wisconsin."
