Few introductions in music history have been more blunt.

    “Hi! My name is!”

With that opening line, Slim Shady sent himself hurtling into notoriety, bringing Eminem and Marshall Mathers along for the ride.

“The Slim Shady LP,” released 20 years ago this week, was a raw, colorful, parental-advisory-plastered shock wave of a major-label debut.

Speaking mostly through his alter ago, the character he dubbed Slim Shady, Detroit rapper Eminem dished up knife-edged wit, pop-culture savvy and deep dives into his own turbulent psyche and domestic life. In its blurring of fantasy and reality, the album provoked accusations of homophobia and glorification of drugs and violence. Produced by proven hip-hop heavyweight Dr. Dre and Detroit’s aspiring Bass Brothers, it was a pop crossover smash and a glimpse of rap brilliance.

I was 16. I still remember my friend’s older brother coming home from juvie with the Just Don’t Give a f--- single sometime around Thanksgiving the previous year. We were all blown away by it. We smoked so many blunts to that s---.

I was 9. Ma Dukes bought this s--- and we used to listen to it together religiously. My wordsmith proclivity's catalytically sequenced precursor would probably be this album. Set precedence as a proverbial launching pad that jump-started my motif's humble beginnings. Genesis of a Multi-Dialectic Derelict. Vernacular so spectacular. Battle Rap Manufacturer. Still stealing new mommas Acuras. Wrecking them and bringing them back to them. They won't even put $10 in the $20 sack for him. Pardon my obstructive nature, but that's not decorum.

MMLP doesn't deserve that type of neglect. Neither does Devil's Night's Eminem contributions. Should have just been an Em album. Would have easily been his magnum opus with that production, alone. D12 did not deserve that. Even Dre was probably thinking that s---, too. "These n----s lucky as f--- because they wack, with the exception of Proof."

I am Doctor Who and I will go back in time to change history and make that happen because I miss the possibility of not ever finding out what a D12 was. More like a Matchbox.

I'm sick because I feel like Devil's Night could have survived as an instrumental album for the most part. The guitar on Fight Music and Revelation > *

Few albums I remember buying as vividly as The Slim Shady LP. Back then, I didn’t have cable, and we were listening to the radio on the way to the mall and my step sister gets excited because “the M&M song” is on... It was “My Name Is.” I’d never heard it before, but I loved it.

I was 13 and asked my dad if I could go to Sam Goody when we got to the mall. I had planned to buy the single but they only had the full-length CD. I decided to roll the dice and bought the Parental Advised version and would hide it when I got back to my mom’s. My dad was a DJ, so he bought the clean version.

I opened it as we walked through the mall and didn’t understand what the f--- was going on when I opened the booklet and saw the white dude covered in blood. Didn’t know if I bought a rap or comedy album. I was shocked by how good the rest of the music was and that he was white.

We listened to the dirty version on the way home, and all it took was one listen of Guilty Conscience and my dad made me trade him copies
