This isn't subtle but it's been my opinion for a long time now.

I think Recovery was a huge point and a necessary one in his career, I think the real error started to come afterwards and more so on MMLP2. He regained his relevance with recovery, while selling out a good portion but it still felt genuine to a degree. When he decided to do MMLP2 and had that relevance again I'd imagine he felt the only way to be a "successful" artist at that point was to continue with the songs that are meant to target every demographic (continuing to sell out). Meanwhile he should have done what he genuinely wanted like he did with relapse and the discography of his early career, but without the accents obviously and in a better state of mind since it wasn't immediately after detoxing. He shouldn't have continued the pop and love song route on there in the midst of some genuine and some solid tracks. To me that was kind of the beginning of his downfall. Also on MMLP2 I won't forget how it agitated me what happened to his voice despite me trying to ignore it, even though I didn't care about recovery's shouting. He tries to please people too much these days, which is why Kamikaze was such a breath of fresh air. Not because it was one of his best albums.
