What the f--k?) from someone who used to make compelling music, was solid at self-producing, and had a knack for melodic hooks (s/o starnizzy).

I’m not here to cape for JIK like it's an amazing album because I don't love it. But at the end of the day, Kanye will always be talented at piecing things together as a producer which is why his albums will always have a couple gems even if they're not that great as a whole. Like putting Clipse + Kenny G is something no one would have thought to do, but it worked. Em, at least in 2020, doesn't have that talent. He can't even make a song with juice wrld or don toliver on the hook work well. He just seems lost.

I wasn't a fan of JIK at all when it first dropped, in fact I almost felt that ye was a better album. As a big fan of Yeezus I think that's in part from being teased a spiritual sequel with Yandhi and hearing a lot leaked demos that gave me hope for the finished product. I tried it a few times and didn't go back to it all after the first week and left even more disappointed than I was with ye.

I gave it another chance a couple months removed, and while it's still his second worst album after ye, I think I was a little bit harsh on it. It has a clear theme/sonic direction and is cohesive as a body of work. I think Follow God and Use This Gospel are great songs (wouldn't put either of them on his all-time lists, but I like them well enough) and I enjoy On God, Hands On a decent amount too. As always, the production is on point. The closed on Sunday...you're my chik fil a line is corny but it's the type of corny kanyeism we've always laughed it.

Of course, my biggest gripe with it is the content—I'm not religious but I can appreciate an album about religion, however, you'd think Kanye would have spent more time on the lyrics for an album dedicated to something that's clearly so important to him (and that he started a cult for lol). At the same time, like Kamikaze, one of its saving graces is its length. It's bite sized enough that its flaws don't make me hate myself for listening it all the way through (s/o chance the rapper).

But man, Music to Be Murdered By is just flat out bad. I have my criticisms of Kamikaze, but it works as an album and is coherent body of work. This album is just a shitshow of bad sonic decisions, immature lyrics from an almost 50 year old man, and overall horrible songs. And holy f--k is it long for absolutely no reason. It feels like a stan just pasted together some unfinished songs over horrible production, added a few hooks, and randomized them on a tracklist (actually that's not giving stans enough credit, I feel like a true stan with audio editing skills could make some way better edits lol). And I could forgive some immature lyrics if the songs at least sounded good, but like I said, listening to this album feels like Eminem has never heard music before.

tldr: JIK and MTBMB are both mediocre, but Kanye knows how to craft a song in 2020 and eminem doesn't

Budden and them all loved it. Mal said what I said though about how some songs have way too many words packed into the verses (.ie Godzilla, Leaving Heaven) and it takes away from all of the other great parts about the songs.

Premonition and I Will bridge and hook are the closest to 00-03 Em it gets in 2020 I think. Amazing he can still sound/rap like that if he wants to

Yeah misogyny is still very prevalent in hip-hop, but I'd take "I'm gonna f--k your b----" misogyny over something like the line I posted. I'm sure there are pockets of good writing on the album because even on his worst albums he still manages to sneak in some good verses. He's a talented writer who gives into his worst instincts when it comes to bad punchlines and edgy jokes. But show me what you think is good I'm genuinely curious and I'm not being sarcastic.

To this Em album? No, after Kamikaze I was actually really curious what he was gonna do next because that album was as close to a return to form as he's had since his hiatus. You can check the initial reaction thread for kami a lot of what I said was positive despite some gripes. As for this album I was skeptical of the long tracklist but very intrigued by all the features. I was excited when I heard the intro and the first track. But it all started to go downhill after that.

What about that post is me "digging deep?"

I feel you...thought the same when I heard it for the first 2-3 times... But the more I listen and think about it, the more I have to admit, it's better than I thought...Actually it's pretty dope. Maybe give it another shot when you're in the right mood...But if you don't like it, it's totally fine bro

I'm not faulting you or anyone for enjoying the album. If you're a big Eminem fan, you're a big Eminem fan and I understand that—you're gonna get more enjoyment out of it than the average person. Nothing I say is ever gonna sway a stan into not enjoying it nor would I even want to do that. I couldn't care less what people enjoy listening to in their free time.

But this forum would be boring if we just said "I like that album and you don't like that album. agree to disagree? cool? cool." Forums are about discussion, and when we get into X album is better than Y album it turns into more of a critical dialogue than just pure enjoyment factor. And I would like to hear people's arguments in favor of the album, because right now I can't see all that much to like.

I only called it out because you do it all the time. Like I remember when kamikaze came out you quoted the bad lyrics at the end of Not Alike that he did on purpose as to why the writing was weak. If you agree the guy is a great writer, then there’s no argument here. Tell me how songs like “I Will”, the intro, “No Regrets”, “Lock it Up”, “You gone Learn”, etc. are just flat out bad songs. They all have very very limited bad/corny lyrics and all of them have more than a few examples of special lyrics. He is unquestionably an elite writer. If you believe they are just bad sonically, so be it, we can agree to disagree there. But writing wise, flow wise, and sonically all of those songs are good/great for me.

I think the first half of the album is just too much to process, because of the different directions and many features, but I fell a little bit in love with the second half of the album and now the first half is kind of starting to grow on me (even tho there are 2-3 songs I wouldn't have needed)
