yeah the song is open to interpretation so no one can say for sure what the message is (but arrogant c---- will act like Em told them personally) beauty of modern art, you can see it one way and someone else can see it completely different, yet some people still dont want to accept that because they are so attached to their own view of it.

Don't think this is a song that's open to interpretation. It's a beautifully constructed song with a very clear message which is why the video ended the way it did.

Great write up @Slyk , I really do appreciate the amount of effort that went into this!

I don't think I could add anything more to this than you already have. Even after the suggestions from others. And not being from the US, you've helped shed further light onto my understanding of the lyrics (ie, the Colt 45 line) so thank you.

Is it crazy to say that 8 ALBUMS later, Em has been able to contend with the story telling of his own Masterpiece: Stan?

gonna be a controversial opinion, but i think this takes the cake over stan. obviously 2 entirely different concepts, but the layers and amount of pure research and plannign that went into not only the lyrics but also the video here i think takes the cake

I neither agree nor disagree. I just simply think it's too early to tell. Never underestimate the importance of time. Stan is nearly 20 years old (wtf??) and is highly regarded as his best work. This is because of the concept and the story telling. The concept being original.
In 20 years, is the Vegas shooting going to hold up as a topic enough to be remembered? Given the downfall of democracy and overall human decency over the last 20 years, there's a high chance this shooting will be completely overshadowed by much worse scenarios, leaving this song redundant.

very likely that the general message (gun violence/control) will still, unfortunately, be a thing in 20 years. but i totally agree and maybe semi-rescind my last post... Stan became more than a crazy song, but evolved into a culture/following of eminem: "Stans". The audience that Stan reached will be far wider than this. And unfortunately, this track's genius will go over the head of a lot of people. Stan was more on the nose about what was being talked about once the last verse hit...that's also true here, but it's not as obvious that the entire track and every bar was a double entendre..the listener needs to dig a little (lot) deeper to truly see that and then therefore appreciate it...which tbh, won't happen.

...i guess i can only speak for myself, but as of right now, i think this topples stan as a concept/intellectual track/lyrics goes, but i you're right -- i don't think the masses will feel the same even as time passes

Don't get me wrong, I do agree that the lyricism and concept of the story is monumental. Breathtaking quite frankly and it has made me proud to be an Em fan again. I just don't think it's going to hold the test of time. Not because of the lyrical capability of it but because of the subject matter. Give it a few years and I'm almost positive the term "this has aged horribly" will be commonplace. But again, more because the "event" will be second or third fiddle to a more heinous act of violence rather than the lyrical abilities.

Ugh, even when Eminem gets good again his Stans are still as annoying as ever. The hypocrisy of you calling anyone an arrogant c---- is rich with that attitude.
Btw song has nothing to do with Alfred Hitchcock. We're discussing the song, not the album.
