Mad Men for sure if you haven't seen it.

    Seconding Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul/Succession/Atlanta.

Also—The Leftovers. The Deuce (same creator as the Wire, about pimps/prostitutes/p--- in 1970s NYC. You'll def get a Wire vibe from it—I haven't finished it yet tho). Dark (in german, maybe the best OG netflix show imo—haven't finished either tho).

I wouldn't say these are all necessarily as good as The Wire/Sopranos (Mad Men is an easy #3 for me), but these are some of my favorites from the post-Sopranos/Wire era.

Yeah the Deuce I remember I was going to watch that.

I tried Mad Men but i had to stop after season 1.
I didnt like any of characters bar Don,Betty & Peggy. The rest didn't interest me.

It picks up a ton in season 2. I personally loved it from the beginning but most people I know who were lukewarm on season 1 loved it from season 2 onward.

Have any of you seen The Corner? It’s an HBO miniseries that David Simon created before he made the wire. It’s really good, i highly recommend it.

David Simon wrote a nonfiction book about inner city Baltimore and this miniseries is based off that book. Then after the success of the book and miniseries, he created The Wire which is conceptually based off of the book/miniseries.

Oh s--- that’s awesome to hear. I was planning to watch that after I finish watching The Shield. I love a good revisionist/alternate history story.

I read the book which is a great read, you can really see how it formed the basis for the series. Bought the DVD of The Corner and watched the first ep but never finished.

BTW: Brother Mouzone's security who always forgets to bring him his magazines is played by the guy David Simon followed around Baltimore for the book, DeAndre McCullough. He sadly OD'd a few years ago.

I’ve been meaning to read it for so many years now but I always forget about it and end up reading something else lol (side note, I’m reading Into Thin Air right now, i highly recommend it).

d--- that’s sad to hear about that dude. Opiates are a f---ing b----. I was addicted for almost 10 f---ing years. I haven’t gotten high on them since 2010 but I’d be lying if I said I don’t think about them at least once a day. I’m 10 years removed from abusing them and I still fantasize about them smh

For the book, didn’t he also ride around with a cop too to see and experience all the calls and interactions firsthand?

d--- glad to hear you have 10 years clean man. That's impressive that you have that willpower.

He has a different book where he rode with the cops called Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. It was also developed into a network TV show, I've never seen it though and only read a bit of the book.

I get so many mixed reactions when I ask about Mad Men. I'll probably end up watching it next. Breaking bad would be my #2 behind Sopranos and Wire 3rd. I watched the Deuce season 1 and it was incredibly slow. I stuck with it in the 2nd season and it lost me. Should probably try and watch it again. Leftovers was great also

Thanks man. I had to cut off all my friends which really s----d at the time. So many years have gone by I wouldn’t even know where to score now so that’s a primary reason why I’m still clean. Not having friends who use and not having a connect make staying clean so much easier. But make no mistake, if i were around it I’d get high. I have no doubt in my mind.

Oh s--- yea Homicide. I always get that confused with his other nonfiction book.

I can see why Mad Men wouldn't be for everyone, but I think it's amazing. It's created by one of the main writers for the Sopranos if that helps. It's def slow to start and there's not as much action as the Sopranos of course, but it deals with some of the same themes regarding existential dread, depression, etc. except it was the 60s so doctors just prescribed you more Lucky Strikes. Stick with it at least halfway through season 2.

You gotta give yourself more credit man—I'm sure being far removed from that life and group helps a ton, but it's your own resolve that keeps you from trying to find and contact those people.

Yes if you’ve never seen it I highly recommend it. It’s so different and was revolutionary in many ways. The first couple seasons are some of the best television ever created.

The problem with the show was that the writers were making it up as they went along so things get really f---ing weird in the later seasons. And having to wait a week to watch the next episode or year for next season, many fans would obsess over it and come up with all these theories during these waiting periods and when things didn’t play out how they expected, it left many fans frustrated.

Most episodes end in a major cliff hanger and even if the writers don’t perfectly explain stuff or tie up loose ends in a satisfactory way, you won’t care because you’re just watching them back to back. You’re not spending any time considering what should or might happen in between episodes since you can just watch it immediately and find out.

Not sure if this makes sense but it will after you watch it. I haven’t seen it since it was on tv. Just talking about it makes me want to revisit it.
