These recent deaths have made me realize something else about Hip Hop or rather Rap music specifically. Rap is still basically a young genre but we’re closing in around 50 years of this thing. We’re reaching the point where a lot of these guys are almost senior citizens or are seniors. They’re more susceptible to disease and the consequences of their lifestyles. We’ve crossed that barrier so these kinds of deaths are going to happen with more frequency. Of course it’s jarring because they’re happening one right after the other. But for example, I was like 14 when Pun died. And even though he was morbidly obese, it was unheard of at that time that a rapper could die of natural causes. We were still thinking that the main way rappers were going to die is from violence. And that was because Rap was a young man’s game and rappers were still relatively young. But that was over 20 years ago. Rappers from that era and beyond are in their 40s, 50s and 60s now. We’ve reached that point where strokes, heart attacks, cancer, etc are more likely to happen to the legends rather than street violence. I don’t know how Shock G died but his passing as well as Black Rob and DMX’s passings just made me think about that. Older genres have been here for decades but this is a time when Rap listeners as a group are collectively bearing witness to the mortality of our heroes for ostensibly the first time. DOOM, Ecstasy, Prince Markie Dee, DMX, Black Rob, Shock G. That’s a cross section of the 80’s, early 90’s, mid 90’s and late 90’s, gone within the span of a few months.

    Anyway, RIP Shock G

Back in the day, my childhood neighbor and I would trade CDs to load onto the computer and burn our own copies. Sex Packets was one of the first albums I got from him, and I credit it as one of a handful of albums that helped steer me toward a deeper interest in rap.

    RIP
