THE D.O.C. WAS ACTUALLY PULLED OVER BY BEVERLY HILLS POLICE BEFORE NEAR-FATAL CAR CRASH - BUT THEY LET HIM GO



After leaving a party one night in Los Angeles, The D.O.C. was admittedly “high as a kite” when he eventually fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the side of the freeway. Without the aid of a seatbelt, he flew out of the rear window and slammed face-first into a tree. His injuries required 21 hours of plastic surgery and over two weeks in the hospital. When he came to, he realized he couldn’t speak, a devastating feeling for anyone but especially a rapper who makes a living using their voice.

The life-changing incident is one of many subjects The D.O.C. addresses in the forthcoming documentary The DOC, which he described as a very “cathartic” experience. Speaking to HipHopDXin a recent phone interview, the man born Tracy Lynn Curry looked back on that fateful night. What some people may not know is The D.O.C. had already been pulled over once by Beverly Hills police but when the officers realized who he was, they let him go despite the fact he was clearly intoxicated.

“The night of the accident, it was like a 24-hour period where I had tried both cocaine and ecstasy,” he admitted. “And then it just quit working when I was driving home.” When asked if he wished the officers would have hauled him off to jail, he replied, “I did that for about 30 years. But here recently, I understand that those officers were just a part of that time. Had they taken me to jail, I wouldn’t be here where I am right now today. Now, I have insight into an understanding that allows me to help a lot of other people who are in that same space.”

But it was a long, arduous road to get to that place. For years after the accident, he drowned himself in drugs and alcohol as he continued to write for N.W.A. He ultimately left Ruthless Records for Death Row Records where he’d go on to write for Dr. Dre. But when he had his now 17-year-old daughter Puma with Erykah Badu, that changed everything and soon, he was able to start loving himself again.

According to The New York Times reporter Tripp Mickle’s new book, After Steve: How Apple Became a Trillion-Dollar Company and Lost Its Soul, Dre’s famous video proclaiming he was “the first billionaire in Hip Hop” caused Apple to cut $200 million off the price. The initial agreement in place was reported to be $3.2 billion, just as long as things were kept strictly confidential.

“It was a sum that Iovine and Dre could barely fathom,” reads an excerpt obtained by iMore. “As the lawyers worked through final details, Iovine summoned the leadership team of Beats to his home near Beverly Hills. He told everyone that they were on the cusp of finalizing a massive deal. The only thing that could spoil it would be for word of the deal to leak.”

Mickle claims Iovine warned his team, “Whatever you do, don’t talk about this,” and even told Dre, “Remember that scene in Goodfellas where Jimmy tells the guys, ‘Don’t buy any furs. Don’t buy any cars. Don’t get showy’? Don’t move.”


But in the early hours of the next morning, Diddy apparently called Jimmy Iovine informing him that Tyrese had posted a video of Dr. Dre celebrating the deal by telling the world about his billionaire status.

“At 2:00 a.m., Iovine got a call from Puff Daddy, who was screaming that Dre and Tyrese, a rapper, were talking about the deal in a Facebook video,” the book reads. “Iovine pulled up the video and cringed as he saw Tyrese bragging about being drunk on Heineken in a recording studio.”


After seeing the clip, Mickle says Iovine panicked about what might happen to the deal, but Tim Cook remained calm about the situation after bringing them to Apple’s headquarters in California.

“When word of the video reached Cook, he summoned Iovine and Dre to Cupertino,” he explains. “He invited them into a conference room for a private conversation. Iovine was anxious and afraid that Cook was going to k--- the deal. Instead of the anger and cursing that would have poured out of Jobs in a moment like that, Cook exuded calm.

He told the music executives that he was disappointed and wished that Dre’s social media outburst hadn’t happened but said that the video hadn’t shaken his conviction that buying Beats was right for Apple.”


Mickle says Cook “used the social media fiasco to demand an adjustment to the terms of the deal,” shaving $200 million from the offer days after — enough to make sure Dr. Dre didn’t become a billionaire. The number checks out too, with reports at the timerevealing the price had been reduced from $3.2 billion to $3 billion, although it was suggested the reason was due to Beats Music’s low subscriber count.

I still think through Apple Music dre should do a aftermath music tab. Pay x amount a month and he uploads x amount of tracks. Unreleased detox tracks, Eminem , 50 , who ever . The music is just sitting there. Why not you know release it and make money off it .

I would happily spend $20 a month on unreleased music .

Lil Wayne said In like 2015 or something that him and dre have recorded over 70 songs together. Has a Wayne/dre song ever even been released? And that’s just Wayne /dre. Couldn’t imagine all the songs dre actually has.

I wonder if Dre will have any production on Kendrick's new Double album . I expect it to have be mixedbyali but also with help from Dre as they have in the past but I wouldn't be surprised to see some new Dre or a feature seen as The Superbowl was supposed to be Dre announcing his return to music .
