Drake didn't release any singles that ended up on CLB before it dropped. post's single from last year that came out months after CLB already has almost as many streams as the most popular songs off CLB. People have short attention spans and forgot about the astroworld tragedy in like two weeks.

Kendrick was out of the news for 4 years and blindly dropped an album that's for the most part not radio friendly and a lot of people aren't into and it still did great numbers. And post and travis and drake are more popular and have legions of pop stans behind them. In the streaming era everyone is going to check these albums out because it costs them zero extra money + rap genius will always put them on playlists

Why expect more? He was gone for 4-5 years, which is an eternity in the social media age. It didn't have any viral singles and it wasn't a radio friendly album. Those are good numbers for what it is.

Post has released singles and they all flopped. That will affect his sales for sure.

We will see what happens with Travis, but I think it's looking bad.

    Kendrick flopped, that's for sure.

Agreed. It’s like we’re seeing the reverse of the “real hip-hop” crowd. Now, it’s the future/Drake etc. fandoms trying to clown rap artists for trying to make non-turn up music. That’s why I think over emphasizing on “replay value” is silly. Like obviously it’s okay to take it into consideration but replay value isn’t everything. Not every album is meant to be played casually or even age with the times. Some albums are just time stamps in history for that particular moment in time. That’s okay.

You literally just described negatives traits of albums. Like there's a reason why Thriller is the best selling album of all time, you turn that f---er on and that 3 track run from Thriller to Billie Jean is f---ing TIMELESS. Art is supposed to be timeless. That's why TPAB still can be played in 2022. That's why 'Till I Collapse still hits as hard as it does 20 years later. That's why Jimi Hendrix's guitar riffs on Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) are still as complex, deep, and amazing to listen to 50 years later.

While it's true that not every album can be played casually, it's absolutely a clear negative if it has no replay value. There's so many albums that literally get trashed solely because you listen to it once and you don't have a need, or want, to listen to it again *cough* Rise & Fall of Slaughterhouse *cough*.

I can list so many songs and albums from hip hop and outside of it that prove the best music is timeless because that's simply a testament to how good it is. If your art cannot age gracefully, it's simply not as good as the rest. That's why d--- is more lukewarm with Kendrick fans nowadays (in comparison to its release) despite it being Kendrick's own favorite album.

I hope Eminem flops and also all your favorite pop artists, I want to see you have a 6 year long meltdown about how there's not enough Dua Lipa songs on the radio or some s---.

Yeah I agree with the sentiments here, comparing projects because the people that make them are as famous as each other can lead to problematic conclusions as every artist makes music with/for a different purpose. Plus to be honest, this has been my most replayed album of this year since The Weeknd dropped, others might not be the same, but I’m still enjoying this project a lot & it hasn’t ran out of steam, as it shouldn’t. I’ll be interested to see how it is viewed by me & others in a year & onwards time.

How often do people today listen to illmatic or Reasonable Doubt? Or any other great album from 20+ years ago. These are undeniably great albums but their worth isnt based on the frequency of people listening to them. That’s my point here. An album can be great in itself without people having to spin it on a monthly or even yearly basis. We can appreciate an album for what it is while preferring to listen to other music more frequently.

I think TPAB is an incredible album! There’s a ton of other music I’ve listened to way more over the past year than TPAB. That doesn’t detract so much from the album itself, at least not for me.

bro nobody buys s--- on f---ing iTunes lol. physicals aren't out yet and only 35,000 out of 286,000 were digital downloads.

    https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/kendri...ig-steppers-first-week-sales-news.152340.html

I don't even know how double albums are counted toward "pure" sales when it comes to digital downloads (if someone has a source on that plz lemme know cuz I'm curious, but I do know that 10 digital song DLs = one album equivalent sale tho) because the entire reason the double album thing came to be was because of physical CDs shipped and digital downloads don't involve physical media. but if you wanna count it as 268,500 instead of 286,000, go ahead lol it barely makes a difference.

I don't even care about sales but you mushbrains need to take 30 seconds to read an article before mouthing off

@TheBorgerShop I think that a lot of art probably strives to be timeless. not all of it succeeds. it's not even close. it's OK that sometimes an album drops and I listen to it a few times, enjoy it for what it is, and move on.

there's a reason that an album like Doggystyle or MBDTF or Ready to Die or Aquemini stands out so much. it's because for every album that's a truly timeless masterpiece, there are 10,000 that aren't. some of them are pure dogshit of course, but many of them are just good albums, and I have fond memories of them and revisit every so often. or maybe they just served a purpose at that point in time/culture and can be appreciated as such. if you're looking to only listen to 11/10 game changing genre defining picks, you're going to miss out on a lot of great music.

It's impossible to listen to albums you love as much as you might want, let alone albums you just like. I mean especially if you have a life lol
