I listen to some. I like 22gz and random s--- here and there by bigger NY drill rappers. Definitely prefer the Chicago predecessors. The NY style with that specific UK-inspired production gets stale pretty fast imo.

It’s cool how drill was born in Chicago, came to the UK and then went back to NY

I used to be the same way tbh but I've recently really grown to like bk drill a lot too. I like how they're switching it up with sample flips and stuff

yeah it's cool how it's hopping all over the world, they have scenes in Nigeria and Ghana as well as some other European countries too but I haven't checked those out much

Yeah the sample flips are getting cool for sure.

I know you mean this specific style with this thread but “drill” is in a pretty weird and confusing place in terms of what it actually means. Obviously it originated in Chicago and production-wise Chicago drill doesn’t sound like UK and NY drill. But imo drill’s umbrella is a lot bigger than that. I would consider a lot of rappers who don’t use production like that to be drill rappers, I think the subject matter is just as important an indicator. Just aggressive raps about specific streets, gangs and opps. I would consider someone like 42 Dugg to be a drill rapper.

Lil Durk is one of drill’s originator’s and he is still making drill music sometimes that sounds nothing like NY drill or even really his early Chicago drill.

yeah with music it's often the production style that defines genre, but I agree 100% about drill. its scope is def far beyond simply the beats, the subject matter and style of rapping itself is almost more important at this point. Like with 41 Bop—a Jesus Walks flip is about as far as you can get from drill production (I mean I guess it's from a Chicago rapper who came about a decade before drill did but that's about it lol) but the way they rap and what they rap about is what defines it and makes it instantly recognizable as a drill song to me

tbh discovering some of these Brooklyn songs without anything resembling those traditional drill synths is what inspired me to make the thread, I def wanna hear stuff from the fringes of what could be considered drill

I always think about Durk's relationship to drill because I doubt the average rap caviar listener would really associate him with drill at all at this point despite being an originator like you said
