Although regarding MJ, the media actually severely critiqued Bad, Dangerous and Invincible back then (there are some very good videos about all that in here https://www.youtube.com/c/thedetailchannel/videos in the Year In Review when those albums were released). But, much like Em said on Careful What You Wish For, "then three years later they go back and regrade it". Which is what happens. Everybody (journalists, fans, average listener) all tend to judge new projects based on either the artist's previous work, best work or personal expectations. That's why after a while when the dust settles, opinions change and what might have been trashed or considered a classic, changes too.
Sep 30, 2022 Hard to see that happening considering his own recent claims about how he prefers to be regarded and remembered as the best rapper instead of an artists who made the best albums. Which should go hand in hand by the way. I think if we were all to pick Em's Best 15 Songs, we'd agree in most of them (regardless of the order) we'd realize those songs were all musically pleasing while maintaining at the same time great rapping and lyricism as well as some high technical dexterity, passion, and intensity without ever straying too far from having a good melody which is, ultimately (in my opinion) what makes for great/good music.
Sep 30, 2022 Having said all of the above, I still hold MTMB Side A & B as great albums and I don't really care what anybody says. I still play most of the songs in those projects regularly. I'd say I've been listening to Side A & B + Relapse a lot in the past few months.

Then again I was only 9 when he died so I wouldn’t really know much about it. I’ll be sure to check those videos out. That’s a good point too, opinions on current Em could change. There could be a future generation that actually really appreciates his music. I guess there’s no way of knowing that for sure right now
Sep 30, 2022 Man, Michael was the artist that got sh---ed on by the media the most. They were even questioning some of his dance moves (like the crotch-grabbing), clothing style, etc. Eversince he bought The Beatles catalogue (among many others) he became one of the most powerful men in the music industry, it made him a target, they were out to get him. He went from being the sweet man and perfect boyfriend every father and mother wanted for their daughters to being a h----------, a pedophile, a man that didn't embrace his race, a weirdo, etc overnight. I have never seen anything quite like it. Not even Em. Not even close. Oh, there is. Everyday there's a new kid who's discovering MJ's artistry for the first time and becoming a new fan. I can assure you that.

Sep 30, 2022 Relapse was received pretty meh by many but that turned into a cult classic by many fans and Recovery was huge even though most of the fans don't f--- with it much, it probably earned him a whole new fanbase anyway. After that, fansdown movement began but at the time he already had a new fan base and fansdown movement was a bit over exaggurated from the beginning even for some older fans. BME was just okay for what it was suppossed to be. MMLP2 was fitting to be the sequel to MMLP maybe not quality wise but definitely fitting in terms of storylines etc. I wasn't really into it too much but it was received pretty well by critics. Some fans were dissapointed bc it had some popish music and hooks like Recovery and maybe production was a bit mixed and poppy than they were expecting. All the other features and compilation albums till Revival wouldn't really have that much of a importance or impact on his legacy anyway but sure he had some wack features and some of the worst music he had ever done in between 2014-2017 lmao. We all know how Revival was recieved by both fans and critics so Iwon't even get into that. So I definitely agree he wasn't even close to himself for some time when he first came back to the game in 09. He wasn't really great, it was kinda hit or miss for some time in between 09-13. But i wouldn't say he ruined his legacy at the time like some might suggest. 14-17 were like hiatus years except some side projects and Revival. So, I doubt anything in that era really made something for his legacy neither. Sure, it was bad because he was releasing very few stuff here and there and most of them were really worse than anything he did. So, the point is I'm not sure anything besides Revival really made a bad impact on his legacy for real. Kamikaze definitely restored the bad impact Revival had anyway. MTBMB was easily the best he has ever been since his comeback in 09. Eminem is in a strange place. When he is as good as he has ever been, most fans and critics basically say it was ok and definitely not as good as he was at his prime. No matter how good he would be today, nobody would really realize that.

Revival was still a Multi-platinum record and one of the biggest rap records that year, Kamikaze was the best selling rap album that year, same with MTBMB. Spawning Billion stream hit singles and soundtrack songs. Also if you wanna ignore actual records sales and just talk rapping impact; Em created an entire sector of YouTube reactors community and YouTube post-SoundCloud era rappers. If you want to ignore that and just be on some technical rap ish. He has only gotten better at lyricism over time. So idk what people are talking about. Godzilla streams alone make it one of the biggest rap songs of the 2020’s.
