Jan 23, 2025 @AOTWClub @Wreckless mixtape has scored a 6.1 Great first mixtape for sure, looking forward to hearing the rest of them!
Jan 23, 2025 1.20.25 Review Starts off with an absolute classic, mobb deep is one of my all time favorites, so definitely off to a strong start! There's a really interesting mixed bag on this one too, just the Burzum-NIN- Alice in Chains threesome was a nice touch. The Burzum track was weird for me, didn't love it but liked it more and more as the song went on. Not a big fan of Depeche Mode, Joy Division or Tom Waits songs but i also didn't hate them or anything. I've also never really been able to get into radio head. I liked the Portishead song and the massive attack track . The angels of light song also surprised me because it's not really typical of what i like. The DJ Shadow beat for organ donar is nice af, I loved that one. DMX is one of my all time favorites so love that one too! I loved heroin by the velvet underground but wasn't a big fan of the last 2 songs! Overall score: 6.5/10 @AOTWClub
Jan 23, 2025 I was kinda wary about adding the Burzum track but I’m glad you enjoyed it more as it progressed. I do have to say that the final track is probably the one i debated on including the most so i wouldn’t fault you for not enjoying it. I admit it was a weird way to end the tape as a whole
Jan 23, 2025 I got a little carried away and now have 36 songs on my playlist, I’m gonna have to shave off 20
Jan 23, 2025 Working on my review rn, had tons of fun with this mixtape so excuse the incoming class in yappanomics.
Jan 23, 2025 Originally, I had Scarface's "Mind Playing Tricks On Me 94'" near the end, but I decided it didn't fit well enough. Still a great track though!!!
Jan 23, 2025 Yeez - 1.20.25 review Just from my first glance at this mixtape’s tracklist I was getting excited because I recognized a ton of artists I heavily f--- with. This mixtape has a very sombre atmosphere to it, the dark vibes pulled me in instantly. The opening track is a song that requires no introduction, it is a classic song from a classic project. In the context of this whole tape it did feel a little unusual because it differed from a lot of the music on here, but hey it is Mobb Deep so I’ll listen anyday. The burzum track is what I was kind of worried about; I usually hate black metal and its goblin vocals which grate the f--- out of my ear canals. This song, though, was a pleasant surprise. The instrumental is just gorgeously twisted, the lyrics poetic and I’ll even give the black metal vocals a pass since they’re juxtapositioned nicely by the middle part’s vocals which are really great and vulnerable. All in all the track is a dark, lofi, gem. The NIN and Alice in Chains tracks are cool, not my favorites from either bands but they’re fun to listen to. Granted both these tracks are great and come from great albums, so me saying this is not an attempt at downplaying their impact. They kept the cohesion going! We need more Nine Inch Nails music that isn’t movie scores. The depeche mode song was great too! Never really listened to them so it was a great introduction to their music. Liked pretty much everything about it. Gotta love the Joy Division inclusion on this too. Love to see a song from their best album ( you heard that right, overrated T-shirt project.) Such a goated band. Now onto Tom Waits, I recognize this man’s artistry and understand why he’s so respected but his music never clicked for me. I didn’t mind this song but it didn’t wow me either. Cool instrumental though. It goes without saying that the radiohead song is a classic. INSANE track from an INSANE album followed up radiohead. Dummy is one of the first records I ever bought with my own money. Love this to pieces. Masterpiece. This song also follows up with the dark vibes and leaves you wondering if mr. Yeez is okay. Jokes aside, this vibe scratches the itch for me, floats my boat, tickles my picke, bakes my cake even. Beautiful track from Mezzanine is next, I’m singing to the choir at this point but I must (again) point out how brilliant of a transition from Pedestal this is. Feels like a natural progression. Now what got me about this mixtape is someone including a track from Michael f---ing Gira’s neofolk sideproject. Angels of Light go f---ing hard man!!! I remember zoning out for hours to Evangeline and thinking to myself, jesus this must be how the guys in those movies where the wife goes missing or something and haunts them in their dreams feel like. Insane track! Love this album, even had it in the selection for my AOTW pick but decided on something else. I’ll even take this over Swans, cmon @ me. Everything about DJ shadow’s existence sizzles my bacon and this song is no exception. Cool play on words in the title. This reminded me that I should relisten to endtroducing. Great DMX track, one of my favorite beats he ever rapped on. Jesus f--- this man was DIFFERENT. His voice and flow are like crack to me :^). Speaking of drugs. HEROIN, HEROIN, HEROIN! THE BANANA ALBUM!!!! Now this is a proper T shirt album. Love it to bits. Heroin is one of my all-time favorites. Lou Reed gotta be one of the coolest MFers to enter a studio. “Heroin, be the death of me Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life Because a mainline to my vein Leads to a center in my head And then I'm better off than dead.” The Aphex Twin song is very pretty. Made me wish I had something to ponder over so that I can utilize it to its full potential. This man’s music requires a certain mood, but when it hits, it hits HARD! Robert Smith is somewhere close to Lou Reed on the cool MFers list. Love the Cure. Saw them live a few months ago and it was one of the better shows I’d been to. As a closer to the mixtape it is a tad leftfield but it does work. The track is not as punchy as some on Disintegration are, but it is hypnotic and wraps up the experience of 1.20.25 nicely. 9/10 @AOTWClub Great mixtape, will probably spin it regularly for months to come. This is exactly what I needed during these cold, winter months.
Jan 23, 2025 Gonna respond to a few of these since im loving the responses so far - i don't know why but Shook Ones Part 1 was my pick for the intro since the start. I love the iconic Part 2 of course, but the beat on the OG is just so menacing, that I had to put it in first. - I've listened to the Burzum albums up to Hliðskjálf and while I've enjoyed some of them, Filosofem is the only black metal album I really keep returning to. Such a great album. Shame that Varg is such a shitbag since it affects how people look at his work. - Yeah, Tom's vocals take some time getting used to. When I first heard "Singapore" I thought I was being trolled - As for Pedestal, reading 5 Berserk volumes in a row does not leave you okay - I didn't know if anybody here knew about Angels of Light lmao. Soundtracks for the Blind is an album that I thought about picking, but I also realize that It would probably the absolute worst pick possible due to its length - As the days pass by I really start to question why I decided to put Pornography at the end. If I hadn't stuck to the 1 track per artist rule I probably would've put another Aphex track but I'm not really sure tbh
