Mar 6, 2025 at 8:35 PM Also I wanted to say with no irony in this statement in the slightest for people who don't know..... The new Rebecca Black album f---ing SLAPS
Mar 7, 2025 at 3:26 AM Thats why hes the GOAT !!! Writing this review like this type s---: Super glad you enjoyed is so much man! With any of these bands you don’t normally listen to such as Parquet Courts or The Strokes, I’d recommend starting with the albums that the songs I used come from. For example Parquet Courts’ ‘Wide Awake!’ and The Strokes’ ‘Is This It’. Great bunch of albums that I’m positive you will love since you liked these songs on my tape. It wasn’t intentional but this one truly is for the skaters of the forum lmao. Thank you for the awesome review. Loved reading through it!
Mar 7, 2025 at 5:32 PM Jimmy Jazz - The Desolation of Jimmy Jazz "Jimmy Jazz? He ain't here, but he sure went by" I was beyond excited to listen to this tape. I was already a fan of a large majority of the artists on here, and the rest seemed very intriguing. I had to wait to listen to it due to having to study for a midterm, which I probably s----d at, but at least I was finally able to dive in. Here is the track by track (please excuse my yapping) Baby Criminal- I’d heard about VB before, but this was my first song from them. I f---ing love the energy. Gotta check out a problem from them soon. Almost Had To Start A Fight/ In and Out of Patience- Never heard of this artist before. Good track though, fits well right after the last one Jimmy Jazz- Great track from an incredible album. I was a bit surprised to see that some members didn’t know this is where JJ’s new name is from (RIP stepdad enjoyer), but then I realized that London Calling is 45 years old, so it made more sense. Alone, Together- Same as track 3, great track from a great album. Born Under Punches- Holy s---. f---ing incredible song. As someone who listened to RIL on repeat for years, I did get used to it being that project’s intro, but I think it still works great here. Crabs In A Bucket- listened to BFT for the very first time earlier this week so this track was fresh in my mind. Great track. Like with BFT as a whole, I was surprised to hear the UK Garage sound of the instrumental, but as someone who recently got really into Burial, it was an absolute treat. Empire Ants- What can I say about Empire Ants that hasn’t been said before. PB is one of my favorite records ever, and this track has always been a highlight. Yukimi Nagano’s vocals are amazing and the instrumentation… dear god. Damon Albarn (or 2-D technically) does a great job as well. Sea Ghost-Never heard of this artist before this tape, so another new discovery. I was a bit worried by the recorder at the beginning, but I liked it. Distance- I’d heard a couple tracks from AJJ’s sophomore album (back when they were known as Andrew Jackson Jihad), but not much else so this was new. It was good, but I wasn’t over the moon with it. Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine- Been meaning to check out Modest Mouse for a few years, but I haven’t gotten around to it. Good track overall I’d say. Half Sister- Hadn’t heard about this artist before. Amazing track, although I wish the singer’s voice was mixed a bit higher. RYM has this album very highly rated, so I might check it out at some point. The Calendar Hung Itself- Pretty good track Trying To Explain- Good track. Definitely the most mellow so far, but has a very good vibe. Empty Stomach Space Cadet- Similar to Viagra Boys, I’d definitely heard about King Krule, but I had no idea what his music sounded like. I expected like.. harsh metal or something from the name. I didn’t even know he was British! Definitely not what I was expecting from the name, but I liked it quite a bit. WHAT’S GOOD- Already familiar with this track beforehand. Been a fan of Tyler for a while, but I do feel like IGOR is his creative peak, at least in my opinion. Great track, slowthai’s part while small, is pretty good. 30- Great closer from a great project. Can we say that --- is underrated? Not sure. I do agree with Allis’ view that having 30 at the end of a primarily alt-rock tape was unexpected, but I like the track a lot. I've noticed that for the most part me and Jimmy Jazz have a similar music taste, and as such, I greatly enjoyed this mixtape. Had some tracks that I've Ioved for years, and I made some new discoveries that I might dive into deeper. Might be my favorite out of all the tapes so far. Overall big thanks to @Jimmy Jazz for the tape and yeah FAVORITES: (Not gonna include the tracks I was already familiar with) Baby Criminal, AHTSAF/IAOOP, Half Sister RATING: 9.5/10 @AOTWClub @Justin Trudeau
Mar 7, 2025 at 9:40 PM LETS GOOOOOOOO!!! Great review, man! Yeah bro at this point the sync’d up music taste is allowing for infinite score farming. Jokes aside, I’m glad you liked my mix! The Clash song was something I kind of predicted not being in most people’s favorites because it is such an odd song. Clash is like an archetype punk band, and here you have them playing some whimsical jazz s--- lol. Definitely one of my favorite songs ever, though. I’ll also say that Protomartyr kicks absolute a---. The whole album ‘Relatives In Descent’ seems like something that will definitely be up your alley. It has some sharper vocal mixing throughout it as well but the lyricism and the instrumentals stay very consistent. Matt Elliott makes this weird gothic, dark folk music with touches of electronic that sounds like there’s a pack of 1800s british pirate vampires outside your bedroom door at 3 am. He has some really memorable music; I’d recommend ‘Drinking Songs’ if you ever find yourself in a devious yet melancholic mood lol. Finishes up with a crazy, droney 25 minute track. Danny Brown as the closer is one of those things that make sense to me but it could be because I have disorders. If I’m putting any rapper’s work into an ‘alt-ish’ context, then its gotta be Danny. Again, thanks for listening! ps. Saw your post about Untrue by Burial a few days back and listened to the album for the first time since like 2018. It is still flames. I appreciate the reminder!
Mar 7, 2025 at 10:13 PM Yeah what I appreciate about this group is that I share similar taste to different people regarding different genres, me and @Jimmy Jazz probably have the most similar taste when it comes to my mainstay genres being punk/emo s---, me and @Ripper Roo also have a lot of the same taste in general but it becomes much more apparent when it comes to different kinds of pop and experimental music, me and @Wreckless and @Justin Trudeau have similar taste when it comes to older music whether it be actual oldies or classic rock/metal. I think it's what's the kept this little group going strong, it's a very wide and splotchy venn diagram in a super fun way
Mar 7, 2025 at 10:16 PM I need to listen to the new Spiritbox album I hear very good things and the opening track slaps, I also need to check the Gaga album I hear it's surprisingly good
Mar 7, 2025 at 10:19 PM Yeah, I agree 100%. Someone said it before, but I'm glad that we've got some variety in the tapes and albums instead of reviewing the same 5 Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit albums. it allows for some good discoveries from artists we probably wouldn't have checked out otherwise. Like I still listen to SAS from Mannibalector pretty frequently, and I'm sure that I probably wouldn't have checked that album out if it wasn't suggested here
Mar 7, 2025 at 10:21 PM Can't believe we're nearly at the end of Round 1 of Mixtape Mania. It feels like it went by fast, but d--- has there been some great music in these tapes. Can't wait to see what Allis comes up with
Mar 7, 2025 at 10:42 PM right lol March felt so far away when we started, went from my 2nd week of classes to Spring Break in the blink of an eye
Mar 7, 2025 at 10:43 PM Speaking of spring break, I'll likely have Allis' mixtape review in early next week because of it! Also with Jimmy's, I could not focus when I was listening to it, so I put it off for tomorrow. Review tomorrow 100%!
Mar 7, 2025 at 11:30 PM Yeah especially when it comes to glaive, ericdoa, brakence, Quadeca, Rebecca Black, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Charli XCX, etc.
Mar 7, 2025 at 11:31 PM This group has made me an expert at reviewing music I feel like Anthony Fantano
Mar 7, 2025 at 11:47 PM Considering I coomed separately for seeing every one of these names I say you got the nail on the head. Vanisher by Quad is getting teased more and more I'm very excited, depending on how I feel when it drops it might be my pick whenever we do album picks again
Mar 8, 2025 at 3:03 AM This is more an insult than a compliment brother. We are leagues ahead of that f-- filming himself trying to be funny. We create tapes and review!
Mar 8, 2025 at 3:25 AM When I was younger I used to listen a lot to Rock music. Then rap came along and it has been a lot of rap, but also pop/latin/rnb with sometimes some rock s---. But since we started this I been listening to rock a lot more. Not just because of the recs itt but also my own 'research' for my tape. Lmao its wild to see how this group/event affected my listening habits.
Mar 8, 2025 at 4:14 AM Yup and it’s now past 4 AM. I’ve been going hard since 11 PM. But imma probably fall asleep soon
