@Wreckless - Born to Boomer REVIEW

    Score: 10.0 (16/16)

What a start to round 2 of mixtape mania and a wonderful comeback story! From my least favorite mixtape last round to (potentially) my favorite in this round. Love the tracks on here, classics and deep cuts alike! Black Dog, Empire are some all timer tracks, and there’s some songs on here from familiar bands that I had never heard before. It truly was a great time listening to some old classics and hearing a lot of new songs in the process! I’m interested to see the song you thought would be divisive (if you didn’t already say it and I skimmed over it sometime in the last couple days), I have a few guesses of which track it could be. Anyways, awesome mixtape Wreckless!

Sweet baby Jesus, another 10 :emoji_open_mouth:

Feels like you guys are just showing some mercy after the last round. But seriously, I’m really glad you liked the tape!

The song from Tiamat. The entire album is filled with strange, psychedelic and atmospheric sounds, but that track is actually one of the more straightforward ones.

Oh wow! That wasn’t either of my guesses haha. I thought it would either be Everything Zen or True Belief

Ha that's funny, Everything Zen was one I threw in as a bit of a crowd pleaser. I thought the rock/grunge vibe with the catchy melody would land well.

But you're right about True Belief. That's another I knew wouldn't be for everyone.

It really shows how differently everyone experiences music

The problem is I have no idea what songs were mainstream back then lmao.

Obviously there's some songs you still hear a lot nowadays so they were & are huge but some I chose on my tape might be considered classics which I have no idea about lol

    When the blood burns

Great tape. I wasn’t expecting so many tracks in foreign languages, but they turned out to be surprisingly good. La Grasa de las Capitales is absolutely wild and I liked it a lot. I had no idea Kino - Gruppa Krovi was in GTA IV, especially since I’ve played that game so many times. The OutKast track reminded me that I need to give ATLiens another shot. I also really enjoyed the songs from Television and Jeff Buckley.

El Borrego was one track I didn’t really click with, but I respect the bold choice to include it. Waves of Fear didn’t do much for me either, and while the high-pitched vocals on Debra almost felt comical at times, the song itself was still pretty solid.

Overall it was a very solid mix.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!!! GTA IV is the main reason I found out about Gruppa Krovi (and the REM song too) but the album that song is from is really good. El Borrego was definitely an odd one. The language barrier makes it so that the satire in the lyrics doesn't really come across, which is probably something I should've accounted for when adding it in

I knew I had to take the REM and Television songs when I had my chance :jaydaps:

I knew the foreign language songs would be a bit divisive (I can't even understand what the Russian track says lol), but I'm glad you enjoyed it mostly!!!

    @Wreckless - Born To Boomer

    review

My apologies for getting this review out so late, caught something and have been bedlocked for the last 2 days. I guess it is not just me though, cause this mixtape is sick as f--- too. Strong opening with the catchy Princess of the Night, a song that I hadn’t ever heard before. It immediately got stuck in my head as I have been humming parts of it since my first listen. Black Dog is a track that needs no introduction, classic song from, to me, the best Zeppelin album. The third track, Empire, kept the nice momentum of the mixtape going; I really appreciated the political/social message of this tune. It’s an another song I hadn’t heard before but it was really memorable to me because of how paradoxical it is lol. What I mean by this is: there’s this powerful RATM-esque message here that is laid out via these power-metal vocals that remind me of a number of slightly cheesy bands that stick to more high fantasy, fiction material.

    For example :
Just a lil connection I made that might not resonate with everyone.

Christian Woman was an interesting song. I like how it’s written; concise but powerful, especially when paired with the instrumental that does just enough to make the themes pop. Only gripe I have is the vocals but that is down to preference. Albatross kinda sounded like an early Audioslave song to me, I enjoyed it for what it is. Very nice transition into the Bush song, one of my favorites on this tape. I like how muddy it sounds lol, definitely a fire cut. Seeing Get Back on here had me thinking for a moment that this man chose the Beatles song, lol. This one definitely works better on here than the fab 4 one would lmao. She has a great voice and I really like the grungey vibes. As for Louie Louie, I must confess that I’ve never been a big Motörhead fan, thus this was a song that I enjoyed quite less than the others. True Belief is a song that I’m sure will grow on me more in the future due to the singer’s voice. Some of the hard-rock vocal styles take me a while to get used to. The music on the track is great, though! Doctor Doctor is a song I’ve definitely heard in the past but can’t for the life of me remember when or where. Great, energetic tune that I saved for future listening, especially in the car. The Tiamat song was okay, I liked the different sections of it and how it was structured all together. Although it did not really come close to Black Lodge for me, which is a song I’ve grown to really love during my time with this mixtape, it introduced me to a band I’ve never really heard of before. Say Just Words is, to me, the better one out of the two Paradise Lost songs. I love the pacing on it and the singing sounds a lot more convincing. It is also a great cut to start finishing up the mixtape with. It is followed by a great Maiden song. I loved the instrumental here! More laid back than some of the other Iron Maiden tracks I’ve heard. This cut was tasteful both sonically and lyrically, some very nice existential themes here. Huge props for ending the mixtape with Sonic Youth and Joy Division - some of my favorite bands ever. These tracks, along with the Maiden song, gave the mixtape a kind of ‘dreamy’ ending. I like the decision to end a hard hitting mixtape with some pensive, almost meditative tunes. Really gave the whole thing a touch of class.

It may be a bit obvious that I’m kind of out of my depth here. I’m not too familiar with most of these songs, bands, or genres. (hence I’m thankful to have an opportunity to change that by listening to a cool mix like this). I’ll conclude my yaps by thanking @Wreckless for the tape and yeah.

    8.5/10
