Miss Me came on and d--- I forgot them older Drake mixtapes from my highschool days still are fire. I know we joke about Drake being corny and a commercial sellout… but the man can make hit records unlike anyone. Which is why I said all he needed to do was make a pop record and people would move on. You be suprise how hypocritical rap fans are and how much the GP jumps on bandwagons and trends. I’d never call them hitmakers though. You’re not really making the hit if you’re not even writing the catchiest parts that people are singing. I guess we could call you a hit performer though. I think “hitmaker” in general is a stupid term because in most cases where it’s used it only applies very, very loosely. Sure, Drake is a hitmaker I guess, but it applies very, verrryyyyyy loosely.

The real hitmakers are the ones behind the scenes making the beats, writing the lyrics, etc. who don’t get enough credit. But from a general consumer standpoint yes it makes sense to call Drake a hitmaker. Just offering up some alternative thinking to the smart people at Section Eighty.

I like NOKIA but man is it Drake’s most blatant attempt a hit yet. It’s kind of disgusting in a really desperate way. It has all the tropes of modern pop rap hits. But at least Elkan, the producer of the song, was able to buy his mother a new car off of NOKIA’s success. Credit to Drake for putting his name and vocals on it to give it that extra push.

Not in all cases but in a lot of cases yes. In that sense Drake would indeed be the one who made the song a hit. But without the catchiness it wouldn’t be a hit… soooo we are still back to the producers and writers being the real hitmakers. I also think NOKIA could’ve blown up on TikTok and possibly became a hit had Elkan just released it himself without Drake’s vocals. But let’s be honest, Drake would be nothing without the labels and other famous people that pushed him first. So then if you really wanted to go that route you could say the labels are the hitmakers… LOL which still lends to my point that the people behind the scenes that don’t get the credit are the real hitmakers.
