Aug 17, 2025 at 10:23 AM Hey y'all. Decided to take a bit of a detour this time around compared to my last few picks. I'm in a pretty strange place when it comes to pop music. Aside from like, Olivia Rodrigo and Charli XCX, I'm usually not as entranced by modern pop artists nowadays. Except for one.... My fifth pick for AOTW Club Is... Lana Del Rey - Norman f---ing Rockwell! Six years before she would be beefing with Ethel Cain on Instagram, Lana dropped one of the best Pop albums of the past twenty five years. There are lots of interpretations of NFR, but I've always seen it as a lament for a version of America that was long dead by the time that the album dropped, and the whole record sounds bittersweet in my opinion. Whether it be the 9 minute epic "Venice b----", the cover of Sublime's "Doin' Time", or my personal favorite "The Greatest", there's lots of stuff to enjoy on this album. I know that Pop records have been pretty divisive on here before, but I hope that everybody enjoys their time with this project (some of my fellow Zoomers might have even listened to it before!!!) @AOTWClub @Justin Trudeau
Aug 17, 2025 at 11:23 AM Not my pick let’s go Excited to dive into this album, have only heard great things Also just an early hint two weeks out, Lana and the artist of my pick have collabed
Aug 17, 2025 at 2:56 PM Wasn't expecting this one, only gave it one or two listens so I'm interested to revisit it. From what I remember this is one of my favorite Lana records but it's been ages since I listened to any of them Big fan of the Sublime song but her cover is great as well
Aug 17, 2025 at 8:25 PM @AOTWClub @Yeez has selected Lana Del Ray- Norman f---ing Rockwell! Get your reviews in for failure, ill tally them up Thursday Night!!
Aug 18, 2025 at 2:19 AM I got Lana in my discog deep dive list, but haven't tapped into Ethel's music much either. Any suggestions where to start with Ethel?
Aug 18, 2025 at 2:22 AM I haven’t listened to much of Ethel either but a good place to start would probably be her 2022 album Preacher’s Daughter as that’s the album that really got her some attention at first. I still haven’t checked out a full album myself lol but I will probably start with that album as well
Aug 19, 2025 at 1:37 AM Failure- Fantastic Planet This album is really good! Id never heard it before. Saturday savior starts the album off with a b---, love that song instant liked playlist addition. I also love Sargent politeness, Smoking Umbrellas, Pitiful and Stuck on You. There were no bad songs on this album, I basically liked all of them but really loved those 5 songs I mentioned. Definitely gonna keep this album in my rotation. Score: 7.5/10 @AOTWClub
Aug 20, 2025 at 1:48 AM @Justin Trudeau @AOTWClub Failure - Fantastic Planet I was somewhat familiar with Failure cause I've heard Solaris, The Nurse Who Loved Me, and Stuck On You before and very much enjoyed them all so I was excited to check this out. The first couple songs weren't as immediate to me as it was for Justin but on subsequent listens I've grown to like them for sure, especially Saturday Savior. Smoking Umbrellas and Blank became instant favorites from the first half to me. Adore grunge music but although I was really enjoying myself and liking the transitions and segues in the beginning something wasn't clicking with me like some other things in the genre do. Although the review was already going to be positive I thought I wouldn't like it as much as I was expecting, but this is an album that just gets better and better as it goes on. I really liked Dirty Blue Balloons, I enjoy Solaris like a mentioned previously and I enjoyed Pitiful but the run from Leo to Daylight is genuinely immaculate to me, like real masterclass in the genre s---. Adored Leo, The Nurse Who Loved Me is great, Another Space Song keeps the streak going, Stuck On You is arguably the most timeless of the songs i think it's a very obvious highlight. But Heliotropic and Daylight really clicked something into place for me, these two sprawling songs made me thing "This sounds like if a grunge band made a Tool album" and that one thought instantly made me like the whole album more lol. Even through my zoomer brain I really appreciate the willingness for an album to take its time and for the artists to let their songs breathe and live in its own space for a while and this album is a great example of that. Not to mention obviously the singing and instrumentation are great for the vibe it's trying to accomplish. Although I still don't quite adore the first half as much as I do the second I feel every song growing on me with each listen and this album is 100% staying saved Favorite Songs: Smoking Umbrellas, Leo, The Nurse Who Loved Me, Another Space Song, Stuck On You, Heliotropic, Daylight RATING 9/10
Aug 20, 2025 at 3:20 AM I wasn’t expecting such a high score from your review, Glad you liked it. I had a similar first impression. Some music really grows on you and for me this album and their others ended up being like that On a side note. I watched a clip from their documentary and saw the girl in your AV talking about them. That got me to check out her album. The singles compilation or whatever. I actually liked it a lot
