I believe so. Idk if we're going wild with it or if we're gonna narrow a theme down tho.

    Taylor Swift - Folklore

    review

I'll be honest, although this album has been pretty huge ever since it dropped, I wouldn't have bothered checking it out if it wasn't for y’all in @AOTWClub . Something about T swizzle that just makes me want to stay away from her music… probably has to do with the persona she’s built for herself and her annoying online cult.

Despite that, I tried to enjoy this; and although there were moments on here that are pretty f---ing great (which I’ll get to), the actual album feels like a sterilization of Indie Folk for the masses. Maybe it's good exposure for the genre at the perfect moment in time, but I find the production sheen to be self defeating. If Taylor wanted to make an album that was raw and artsy, she could've started by dropping the maximalist vocal production. That being said, the moments when Folklore embraces Dream Pop tones on tracks like Mirrorball and This is me trying are where this tender soundstage shines the most.

So what makes this record good? Well it’s just quite pleasant to listen to. The songwriting is competent, a decent Bon Iver feature, and some really pretty instrumentals. Taylor admittedly has quite the knack for story-telling, such as in the fuzzy Betty and in The last great american dynasty, although the latter’s ending suffers from what I presume to be one of Taylor’s habits: making everything about herself. For instrumental strongpoints, I can point to the track Illicit affairs with it’s sweet guitar picking and the slick piano in the track Hoax.

My problem with this record is that it’s a bit long, at just over an hour. It wouldn’t inherently be a problem if it weren't for multiple filler stretches between Mirrorball and August, and Invisible string and Epiphany. I also think the album could have ended with "betty", complete with Dylan-esque harmonica, which would have closed the album neatly.

I do believe that this record did do a lot of good for modern indie folk. When a superstar of this caliber decides to take a shot with a genre that had been stagnating for a while prior, it can only help. That said, indie, and indie folk are some of my personal favorite genres of music of all time, thus me being nitpicky about this album was bound to happen.

I respect Swift’s decision to craft a tender, intimate folk album like this but will nevertheless stick to my Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Big Thief, and of course, Bright Eyes. There is also a discussion to be had about this album lyrically sounding like a teenager’s attempt at Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot at times. Almost as if Jeff Tweedy got hooked to snapchat and developed self-esteem issues.

Despite me having some issues with this record, I still want to thank the man @DiggleDogg69 for the pick! Glad you got me to check this album out, I enjoyed it a lot more than I’d believed I would.

    6/10

A goat can’t possibly thrive without other members of the herd such as yourself supplying it with quality grass from the pop punk and emo pastures.

    Appreciate it broski.

    If you don't like me
Pick up your face from off the floor
Ditch all the hate your heart controls
That's just the basic part I know
And if you don't f--- with me
Here's some advice to off the load
Hide all your friends and all your hoes
They might just leave you all alone, all alone
