John Michel & Anthony James - Egotrip

    review

This will be a rather quick review because I feel like I’d constantly be repeating myself otherwise. I’ve given this album like 7 or 8 listens this week and, despite absolutely loving it upon first listen, have grown to appreciate it even more. It is rare that I overplay the f--- out of an album like this in such a short time window, and even rarer is that each time I’ve spun it, I’ve spun it in full. Without skipping a single track. Since this is only a 37 minute long album, and rarely ever does anyone in this club choose a project that isn’t quality, one would expect consistency and hope for a skipless experience. This was different, though.

Egotrip gave me heavy 4:44 vibes. And although this was probably due to the sampling style and the production in general, you’ve got to respect a record that, despite emanating in this very well known jazz-rap atmosphere, manages to do its own thing and only slightly makes you reminisce of other classics such as that Jay album.

The rapping is catchy throughout, with playful flows but somewhat sombre ideas and motives. The way the MC-ing is paired with these lush and expensive beats just floats my boat. I should mention that the features were pretty dang great as well! Every song is its own fantastic display of what great music in this vein should sound like. I thorougly enjoyed my time with this album. Honestly, hearing this for the first time made me think of the times I was first exposed to some other modern rap classic projects like K Dot’s work, Pinata, etc.

I want to thank mr. @jankland for putting me onto Egotrip. Loved every second of my time with it. I’ll now excitedly be waiting for these guys’ next release, but until then, I give this album a

    9.5/10

cause I’m pretty sure they got a tenner incoming sooner or later and I want to leave some room for further amazement lmao.

    RIPPER ROO’S RATING: 7/10

I like the energy and lyrics on this album. Sometimes my inner voice sounds similar to it. There’s a bunch of quotables. I feel like my favorite songs on here have some of the best lyrics. I’ll write out some highlights since I’m lowkey the lyrics person at this point.

    See You at Your Funeral
“The days blur into one and I float around the edge of them
Searching for somethin' that'll make me feel alive again
These past few weeks in a h--- of my own creation”

Scorpion Hill (I love all the lyrics from this song but specifically)
“And if the world is gonna burn
Everyone should get a turn to light it up”
This line really resonates with me, it feels like something I’d say.

    Closure
“The light was startin' to fade
And I could feel the reaper
    Waiting in the tall grass
    Feeding off the fever”

There’s not a bad track on here. The songs are meaningful earworms with high quality vocals and instrumentals. It’s not necessarily my favorite style of music or something I’d go back to very often, but I like it enough to have the songs on my playlist and keep the band on my radar after they’ve already been there for quite some time. Good album @AOTWClub

It's been a crazy week, but I'm getting my review in for PUP tomorrow hopefully

I'm going in completely blind for the most part aside from the fact that they have a song with Jeff Rosenstock (who I'm not that familiar with either) and I can't wait

@AOTWClub Don't forget to get your reviews in!!

I do not have too much to say because this is not my normal music genre but I did really enjoy listening to it, especially since this recommendation came alongside skate dropping and I feel like the sound went with it well since I listened to it while I played a bit. Overall had a fun listen, and a couple songs even made it into my daily playlist.

    Favorite song: Scorpion Hill

I would include it in my discog deep dive thread but just because it’s school related (and would drag out over the span of 3 months), I didn’t. It’s still part of my list on AOTY.org though!

    1. Help! - 85
    2. A Hard Day’s Night - 80
    3. Please Please Me - 75
    4. Beatles For Sale - 70
    5. With The Beatles - 65

is my current ranking with a current overall of 75. We are starting to get to the really good s--- though! They’ll climb the ranks

The title "Morbid Stuff" is arguably one of the most fitting album titles I've ever heard. I mentioned this in an earlier post, but I didn't know what I was getting into before pressing play.

I wasn't expecting a pop punk record (as cringey as it sounds, I thought this was going to be a Foster the People-esque album based on the cover lmao) which sounds pretty fun. There's a lot of energy through the record, and Stefan Babcock's (what a name!) vocals are pretty d--- entertaining.

This album really shines for me in the lyrics department though. Pairing these incredibly fun instrumentals with lyrics about depression and nihilism is definitely a risk, but I think it pays off. The juxtaposition ultimately boosts the experience in my opinion, and it's probably my favorite part of the record. If I had any critiques, it would mainly have to be that (in my opinion) it does feel a bit frontloaded. The second half does have some gems, but I'd say that my favorite songs are mainly from the first. But still, I had a pretty good time with Morbid Stuff. Big thanks to @Jimmy Jazz for the pick and yeah

Rubber Soul to Let It Be gonna be such a fun run to experience in full for the first time. I’m so excited genuinely, I’m glad I get to have a class dedicated to it too. Getting the full context of the time period as well as what was going on in their lives as well to go with the listening, super fun
