Kyle: An Ode To Love & Drywall Review:

I think the mixtape does a good job of achieving what it sets out to do. The song selection fits the overall vibe very well, but it wasn’t until “Easy” that anything really caught my ear. “Fallout” stood out as a genuinely solid metalcore track, and probably my favorite song on this tape. “Lead Pipe” was pretty good. “Dopamine” was another enjoyable track with strong mid 2000s emo vibes. Those were the highlights for me.

Overall, this isn’t my favorite Jank tape, but the mixtape does accomplish what it aims for, delivering a strong dose of emo. It’s well put together and consistent throughout.

    Thanks for posting

Sorry for taking so long guys, I’ve been listening to the tape but just never found the time to write a proper review… absolutely swamped at work.

Will have it up before the deadline hits though. I know the ranks have kinda thinned out but I’m still hella hyped to continue in the club.

Kyle: An Ode To Love & Drywall

This tape really reminds me why I'm personally more of a playlist / 'songs' guy than an album guy.

Sure there are also a lot of albums w different sounds but too many times a lot of the songs have the sime vibe. Which isn't a bad thing, but I prefer diversity.

Saying this it seems like I'm trashing this tape lol but this really isn't the case!

When I was younger I listend quite a bit to Simple Plan, Fall Out Boy etc. and this tape really takes me back there. I like almost every song on here.

Caustic Player is a personal favorite, never heard it before! Common Decency holy s---, need more of this woman she has such a great voice man.

Dopamine another standout for me. Fatal Flaw as well.

So yeah basically aside from these 4 songs that really stood out the rest I just.. liked them. And I could listen to them one by one. 16 songs in a row like this though (or any other genre for that matter) just isn't my thing really.

Most of the songs I never heard before though and added the majority to my playlist so this is great. Thanks @jankland

    Giving this a solid 8/10

@jankland - Kyle: An Ode To Love & Drywall

    review

Happy to see the new round kick off and even happier to review Jank’s new tape. This man made some of my favorite mixtapes in the past rounds and I was equally hyped to spin the new one, especially after skimming through the tracklist and realizing, based on the songs I’d recognized, that this s--- would be up my alley exactly.

Cool intro with the Michael Cera Palin song, a super great mood setter. This track isn’t anything evolutionary but it does the emo fundementals well, the band plays to their strengths for sure.

Caustic Prayer was cool too, I liked the instrumental very much. This song is somehow both mellow and energetic at the same time. Not much abrasiveness at all, even though my brain expected something alike. I especially liked how this track ended, catchy as all h---.

I believe I listened to the Arm’s Length album a few months back when Jank linked it here. Liked it a lot then and like it even more now. Fatal Flaw is honestly one of my favorite selections on this mixtape. Loved this, gotta shout out the vocal work on here too. Effortlessly great.

She’s Quiet was cool but felt like a deep cut kinda, didn’t stand out that much but it kept the momentum strong.

Liked Contigo, sounded very luxurious sonically. Tons of textures on the track, a very interesting mashup of different motifs. The bridge was kinda ehh performance wise but the rest of the song was solid.

Self-Destruct is one of my favorite discoveries that I’d made with this tape. I thought it was a very interesting song. Good vocal performance all around but the production was what floored me. Sounds like if Beach House listened to a ton of MCR.

Loved Bulls In The Bronx too. That instrumental is a total headnodder. I liked the screamo portions quite a lot too. A very dynamic song for sure, and it gets catchier the more you replay it. Up there with my favorites on here for sure.

How Jankland discovered, Shed Life, a band with 170 monthly listeners is a question maybe best left unanswered. What I’ll say though is that I appreciate the American Football-esque guitar work and how they mix it up with a pop punk lead and drums that sound similar to the PUP album I’d picked months ago. Pretty great discovery, cool that Jank’s repping his own emo band lmao.

Easy by Like Roses was pretty darn great as well. Just the right amount of rasp in the vocals and the excellent mix on the drums truly is all it takes lmao. Saved this one onto an ultra niche playlist of mine.

Sleep Theory’s Fallout was one of my least favorites on here, the song just never managed to grab me over the 3 or 4 listens I gave it. Could be a me problem though cause I only vibe with this sound when it’s early Linkin Park attempting it lol.

Lead Pipe was slighly forgettable at first, sounded kinda derivative at times but got better and better as the song went on.

Mt. Diablo kicked a---. Another great discovery from on here. Don’t have a detailed analysis for this one, everything just sounds the way it should. You either love it or hate it. And I absolutely adore it.

Violent Vira honestly kicks a---. This girl’s got a great voice and an even better sense of melody. Great song all around, easily one of my favorites.

Sum 41 releasing an insane album like this one, 23 years after their debut dropped, blows my mind to this day. Always loved this band, hearing Dopamine on here made me happy as f---. Great pick!

The Hot Mulligan song is pretty sick too! Very catchy yet lowkey. Enjoyed it.

Your Graduation is such a classic, seeing it be the final track on here made me hype as f---. Honestly, a mixtape like this deserved a huge ending, and I’m so pleased that it got one. What a way to wrap everything up!

All in all, I f----- with this tape heavy. Always love to see people on here contributing to the S80 whiny music index. We defo need more of that. Many thanks to Jank for putting me onto a lot of new s---, I’ll conclude by rating the tape with a ….

    8.5/10
