I judge shows on their primes and seasons 2-4 of the office are so much better than any season of friends that it almost seems offensive to put these two in the same discussion. the office>>>friends and it's not even really close.

I think more fair comparisons would be How I Met Your Mother vs Friends or The Office vs Parks and Recreation.

I've watched both all the way through. The Office I've watched in it's entirety about 3-4 times. I can pick any episode and know I'll laugh at LEAST once. It's probably my favorite comedy and it's replay value is off the charts. Easy choice for me.

Friends was never as good as the first three seasons of The Office, but it's one of the better sitcoms to ever be on tv. it's midbrow, sure, but so is spielberg. in fact, i'd say it ranks above the office--ten good-to-great seasons vs three great seasons and one that was pretty good. (your "poor man's Seinfeld" dismissal betrays a poor understanding of both Friends and Seinfeld.)

Spielberg is an excellent filmmaker. There is no talent behind Friends, just nostalgia.
I could expand on the similarities if you really care. They are numerous.

Incorrect. Friends is definitely linked to the "rich white people sit around NYC talking" trend of the 90s, originated by Seinfeld, but there's so much talent in that cast, writing staff. It may have a mixed legacy (http://www.vox.com/2014/9/29/6857745/friends-ruined-TV) but it really is top notch for what it is.

You sometimes can track a show's impact, and perhaps, talent from the post-careers of its stars. Nearly every member of the Friends cast is out doing okay (Cox, Schwimmer, Perry) to great (Kudrow, Le Blanc) to high profile (Aniston) work. Ridiculous batting average that most the cast is still working, courting Emmy's and Oscar nods, etc.

Why do you say that Kudrow and Le Blanc are doing better than Cox? I think Cox had higher profile shows/movies than Le Blanc and Kudrow combined. I would've loved to see both Schwimmer and Perry thrive but thems the breaks.

Kudrow and Le Blanc are on critically acclaimed, innovative shows. Cox was on that MILF show, sure, but meh. Good for her, but she's obviously the least talented of the bunch.

Schwimmer I heard was trying to transition in to directing, but now he's going to be the Kardashian dad in the new Ryan Murphy-OJ miniseries. Perry has the chops for a dramatic acting career, but I think he's been mishandled from some of the projects he's tried. Although he is clearly not a movie star, so maybe he's better off trying to land another network tv gig.
