Jul 1, 2015 marginalizing PTA tbh, this could be great, seems like a perfect fit for him judging by his tastes. Don't forget, Altman did Popeye.
Jul 2, 2015 But Popeye is deeply quixotic, and led to Altman's decade-long banishment from mainstream work?
Jul 2, 2015 That doesn't mean that's how Pinocchio would turn out for PTA, I was simply making a comparison to show why he might be interested in such a thing, plus without Popeye we wouldn't have "He Needs Me" If you wanna doubt him go ahead I guess but it seems silly to, seeing as how he's only given us gems throughout his career. I think he could do something special with this story. Right now the two projects he's circling around are apparently this and a horror film, both are really unpredictable ventures and I think that's what keeps him exciting as a filmmaker. Plus hearing RDJ talk about the character of Gepeto is very intriguing: "I was just thinking about Geppetto as a cross between Jake LaMotta and Chico Marx. It's such a vital story, but it's really about this working-class weirdo who invests this inanimate object with all of the qualities he doesn't have. I'm just crazy about the idea.... To me, a wooden boy is a real boy who doesn't feel like he's acknowledged."
Jul 2, 2015 hold on, pt isn't directing right? this is a writing gig... perhaps it'll carry over his stamp, but more likely this'll turn out like the scripts put together by the coen bros. if hes directing, my bad, i won't doubt him, clearly he has good judgement. the impression i got was this was a side project for him. good point about He Needs Me hah. love shelly duvall not for nothing though, pinocchio is one of those vanity projects numerous stars have attempted over the years -- it's like a creative sand trap, a "universal" story open to interpretation, but that markets already been saturated (in my lifetime) with efforts from the likes of roberto beningi, martin landau and f---in drew carey lol. its just a well these guys tend to go to for whatever reason, and it rarely turns out good, imo -- does the world rly want a "dark" version of this story in 2015? and if so, why not hire terry gilliam
Jul 2, 2015 It hasn't been confirmed but it's said that he has an eye toward directing it. I know that Pinocchio has been attempted several times and failed, but I think that's what makes it more intriguing that someone like PTA would wanna tackle it, gives me hope that we could get actually get a dope adaptation of it and I'm so down for that. On a side note, it's pretty wild that two of the best American auteurs, PTA & Alex Ross Perry, have their eyes set on Disney projects, PTA with Pinocchio and APR with Winnie the Pooh.
