Jul 19, 2016 Saban’s Power Rangers is gearing up for its appearance at San Diego Comic-Con ahead of the movie’s release next year. According to production designer Andrew Menzies, the cinematic reboot of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers TV series aims to bring the franchise up to date, and to appeal to a more mature audience (presumably those who used to watch the TV series in the ’90s), as well as gaining a new legion of fans. So far, their efforts are being met with more than a few raised eyebrows, and a heavy dose of skepticism from many. However, true to their word, the new Power Rangers do look a whole lot more modern, as evidenced in the new (controversial) costume design, and the new character posters recently released. To promote their presence at this year’s SDCC, a new Power Rangers movie photo has been released, and can be seen below. The picture highlights the five main cast members: Dacre Montgomery (The Red Ranger), Naomi Scott (The Pink Ranger), R.J. Cyler (The Blue Ranger), Ludi Lin (The Black Ranger), and Becky Gomez (The Yellow Ranger). The movie is being directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) and its credited screenwriters include Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein), John Gatins (Real Steel), Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Gods of Egypt), and Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor). The five Power Rangers are all played by relative newcomers, but established actors Brian Cranston and Elizabeth Banks also join the roster, with the former playing Zordon and the latter portraying the Rangers’ arch-nemesis, Rita Repulsa. Her character too, has undergone a more modern transformation, as highlighted in recent movie images released online. As the Yellow Ranger, Gomez revealed that Rita Repulsa likes to play mind games, particularly with her character, Trini, since Repulsa thinks she is the easiest target. Power Rangers will follow the five main characters as they band together after realizing their small town (and the world) is under threat of being obliterated by an alien force. Following in the footsteps of the TV franchise, the Rangers are all chosen by destiny. The mixed reactions concerning this reboot will no doubt continue until we see a trailer, which could well be at SDCC in the next few days. In the photo above, the Rangers’ helmets are sleek and refined, but the rest of the costumes leave a lot to be desired, particularly the needless (and very uncomfortable looking) ‘boob-armor’ that the female Rangers are wearing. In some of the promo material already released, Power Rangers looks like it could be a great reboot. In others, it looks as though its a clumsy attempt to recoup the success that Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers enjoyed in the nineties. Maybe the trailer will give a clearer indication of where this movie is heading. Saban’s Power Rangers will open in U.S. theaters on March 24, 2017. http://screenrant.com/power-rangers-movie-image-costumes-cast/
Jul 20, 2016 Weren't all the original power Rangers white? And where is the actual white power Ranger. Wow
Jul 20, 2016 unless this stays true to the originals and the black ranger is a black guy, the yellow ranger a chinese girl, the red ranger an american indian I wont be watching it.
Jul 22, 2016 I agree but I don't think it would sell that well and the children would want to see it. I don't think anybody would be willing to take the risk unfortunately. The new suits just look like your run of the mill space suit. meh.
Jul 22, 2016 gotta have the masks open up like that to show the actors pretty faces why are the mouths and such even there
