Aug 15, 2021 Honestly, you understate the south bc you don’t like “trap drums,” so you unfairly alienate a whole demographic of artists. If you actually took the time to listen to these guys, majority are saying something. But you guys label things as “mumble rap” or “generic trap stuff.” These young cats telling stories and experiences. lyrics are there, I don’t think you’re listening fairly.
Aug 16, 2021 Disagree. There's a place for both but the sound is what people feel the most. So as much as the beat and hook seems most popular it doesn't mean that there's no place for lyrical prowess.
Aug 16, 2021 Not true. I still pay attention to all the lyrics of the songs I'm listening to. It just has to sound good and it has to feel real! Not some fabricated bs just for the sake of spitting, because the person has nothing else to say anymore. I love Nas new album for example because it combines all those things. I still need a decent beat that I can vibe with though. Some rappers just take a beat from 2013 they found on their harddrive and think they can save the song purely by rapping fast and doing some multi syllable lyrical miracle s---. You're not that guy pal, trust me. You're not that guy.
Aug 16, 2021 Ehh I think u misunderstood my post. I never said anything about trap music itt, or about mumble rap lol
Aug 16, 2021 If a movie had a good script, but the directing and acting were bad, would it still be a good movie?
Aug 16, 2021 Very wrong. Even to the mumble rappers lyrics are still important. Think of all the iconic thugger and future lines there are.
Aug 17, 2021 True indeed it isn‘t about lyrics. I only listen to rappers that died because i am able to post a rest in peace picture on my insta for clout
Aug 17, 2021 ??? A lot of people here have that attitude toward southern rappers and it’s annoying. Honestly people here allegedly care about lyricism so much but they don’t like anything that doesn’t fit into the box they made up in their head. No one says Harry Potter sucks because JK Rowling doesn’t write like James Joyce. They’re both good writers for different reasons.
Aug 17, 2021 It's never been about lyrics. It's always been about music. The words are obviously an important component but we don't listen to essays. I think we're in a constant cycle of rappers feeling this way as the sound changes from under them. Hip-hop is a music of youth, so there's always a brand new wave just around the corner, and more and more people finding their preference and sticking to that lane. I like the clever wordplay, rhyme schemes and all that, but that is a niche. A lot of rappers who really put the work in to making their verses dense with punches and entendre probably feel like they're killing those who babble melodically, but that is not how music works. If Eminem was correct about lyricism then Crooked I would be an undisputed GOAT.
Aug 17, 2021 I agree but that was not what Antman was saying. And he also didn't read my post, just responded to me based on assumptions and completely ignoring my response after.
Aug 17, 2021 Half asleep responding, but this has been your opinion on southern based rap for a long time. Has nothing to do with your post here. This goes from your Migos opinion, to your opinion on trap production, and so on. I feel like a lot of non-US members here rly don’t understand the south or the records they’re producing. a lot of members are don’t even know what’s out there
Aug 17, 2021 Not true though. I listen to plenty of 'southern' rappers as well as trap music. Never said I disliked it. Me not liking Migos has nothing to do with 'not understanding them' thats such a snob thing to say lol. I just think their albums are boring and repetive , same as other albums that sound like one or 2 songs on a loop. Its the same w old school rap albums btw not just trap. And thats not even a diss just how I feel about it. Not every member has time to check out every rapper thats out there, thats why threads made by Sav etc are cool af. Just that I don't like all of them doesn't mean I don't have an open mind and give artists a chance. But if it doesn't appeal to me, than thats too bad. Kinda weird your accusing me of all people of this tbh. And in the post u quoted I wasn't talking about trap or even rap... I can enjoy music with no substance or meaning that sounds good , I meant (some) pop music
Aug 17, 2021 im mostly being bratty with your analogy here, but there's a huge difference between these two writers lol. joyce is a genius, one of the finest to ever do it. rowling is popular at what she does , but the plagiarism allegations etc def put her in a diff box edit which i guess is ur point lol. but i wouldnt be mad at someone saying harry potter sucks lol
Aug 17, 2021 All I'm gon say is this: I have Eminem, Young Thug and Beyonce on my playlist. Thank you very much, goodnight.
Aug 17, 2021 Yup that’s exactly what I mean—I don't care if someone says Harry Potter sucks but the reason it would s--- isn't because it's not written like Ulysses. Harry Potter could be replaced with Game of Thrones or Name of the Wind or any other easy-read fantasy series I just chose HP because it's recognizable. My point was that different authors have different styles in literature and that they both can have value. The same is true for rap—like if you listen to a Playboi Carti album and don't like it that's fine but if you didn't like it because he didn't rap like billy woods it's like ???
