My friend is actually opposed b/c of the possibility of this plus his subject matter in his music is about African Americans and that it doesn't change. I honestly don't see where he's coming from.

Although time and time again history has shown that music is a very powerful & effective motivator for cultural change or situations similar to that. Humans look for a central figure to lead them before they really take action. That's why there has been leaders in tribes and groups since the creation of societal structures of human beings. These music icons are that central figure especially when they are delivering a powerful message. People need that s--- it gives them confidence, hope, and a sense of support/togetherness when they see others accepting the same message.

Edit: I also am not saying that music icons are the only public figure people can look to for leadership within their social structure. But I also don't see the president, government leaders, social activists (Al Sharpton), police commissioners, etc. making a strong enough case for black empowerment and advancement either. It usually comes down to musicians because they don't have to worry about being as politically correct as these other positions are.

Yes it is. Just not as alive as the '60s or whatever. But yeah it is alive and people need to stop talking about it so much and just starting to put an end to it.
