Subject matter in rap music means jack s---. I'm human, I don't want to hear some guy's wise words all the time, I get the point. Sometimes you just gotta relax. With that said, that thinking is so backwards and limiting as it fails to recognize the talent in anything that isn't "reel rap !!!". I doubt you would watch a movie only because of its context rather than how well executed it is so I can't see why it'd be that way for music. 2Pac was really average.

nah the older i get i don't always want to hear dumbed down s---, i'll take 2Pac's music with meaning over Em's nowadays. but to each it's own. Em's shock value content is cringeworthy.

That misses the point. I could freestyle some pseudo-intellectual garbage right now, make it purposefully bad, wouldn't receive praise for it being real. There's more to it than the subject matter. I love 2Pac but I can't find myself listening to him too often simply because his average quality isn't excused by his meaningful bars and I would just rather listen to more quality hip hop. I don't want to hear "enemies" and "Hennessy" every other bar. Bores the h--- out of me while he raps everything in the same flow in every song, it just makes his realness sound forced. And it's not like Eminem's all about silly stuff... Although it's hard to make an argument for him those days since he seems to go out of his way to make bad music.

i might have to go with Pac, yea Em could rap his a--- off but without him you probably wouldn't ever heard of Eminem. he is one of his influences.

If influence really matters all that much, why aren't we praising 70s hip hop more than 90s hip hop?

Ummmm no this isn't close to a roasting. Go listen to Cube's No Vaseline, Common's b---- in You, Nas Ether for what a roasting should sound like.

How is it not as influential? It is literally the root of it all. Whatever influenced modern hip hop would not exist if it wasn't for 70s hip hop. The influence argument just fails.
