Feb 27, 2015I didn't get your mention. @BigCountry
In my opinion, this was the beginning of the end for Wayne. He started embracing the goofy/lazy side of writing that he would come to be known for. Before, he would come in with these slick flows and that southern drawl with the creative/clever lines peppered in. I think it still works on this record, a record that also contains some of his biggest "bangers" that really cemented what that word meant to the masses today. A Milli's loud and aggressive production is really proto-Meek Mill proto-ScHoolboy proto-Drake in regards to "bangers" in the mainstream. Of course other Southern artists were doing it a la Gucci and Jeezy but Wayne kind of eclipsed them commercially.
Wayne went platinum with his first release at 17, but this is the record that made him a household name. Also the record that ruined Youtube comments forever, mostly due to Lollipop which was a crossover radio hit. Still, I think it has the best production of anything he ever did. I mean people say GRODT's beats are timeless, but these could seriously come out today and they're 7 years old. Call Drake a post 808 rapper if you wanna, but he pretty clearly took the torch from the Wayne that peaked on this tape.

Legendary mainstream debut. Finally Rich is, in my opinion, the quintessential drill album, and debatably Mr. Cozart's magnum opus (strong emphasis on debatably.) This is a great project, and while I feel Chief Keef has only gotten more intuitive and clever with his flows and lyrics, there's something about his raw tenacity over those Young Chop beats that make this work just as good, if not better, than what he would move on to do. 7.7/10Ordinary Joel, Fire Squad, Groovy Tony and 1 other person like this. -

around 7.5/10. it blew me away at first but kinda lost its lustre over time as others hijacked the style and ran with it. Kinda like what happened to Wacka Flocka/Lex Lugar a few years prior. Still, can't deny its very significant influence.boyz n the suburbs, Ordinary Joel, Groovy Tony and 1 other person like this. -

It's a cult classic imo. I'd give it a 7.5/10, I feel like it was better when it was just released. it doesn't sound dusty, I just think it was a better listen when Keef was on top.marmin shkreli, Ordinary Joel, Groovy Tony and 1 other person like this. -

Honestly? 9.8. It might be the best album since Supreme Clientele, or at least since The Blueprint. It's eighty minutes and it feels too short. Thug is the best rapper on the planet the whole time through and Quan is one of its top three writers. There are probably a dozen songs on here that could reasonably be argued as the song of the year in 2014. This is an absolute masterpiece that I can't see being topped for a long time.Skippy, aquaberryares, Meero and 1 other person like this. -

Honestly I hate that I liked this so much mainly because of how little I respect Travis as an artist, but I honestly can't say there isn't a bad song on this project. Quintana is the best song he's ever released (s/o to T.I with the renegade), Mamacita sounds like it coulda been ripped right off tha tour, and Sloppy toppy is one of the best beats i ever heard. Definitly my favorite Travis project and it isn't close. Been replaying this ever since it dropped.
edit: fixed my rating cause i accidently rated it higher than a UGK album smhANOZ, Ordinary Joel, DKC and 1 other person like this. -

project showed significant growth from Owl Pharoah; still wore his influences on his sleeve but also started to grow into himself, set himself apart a little more. But still it aint perfect.
First half (tracks 1-6) has all the strong standout iconic s---. dope f---in tracks, bangers, with shittons of replay value. productions amazing, verses & hooks are goat af, executed nicely. Second half, set aside Grey, felt weaker, def bogged the tape down a bit; tracks don't click as much cause they just aint as special as the ones on the first half, kinda forgettable.
all in all i'd say it's a mixed bag. still good tho just not very good or great to me. 6/10. Feel like Rodeo outdid the s--- out of it.Last edited: Jul 30, 2016ANOZ, Ordinary Joel, Fire Squad and 1 other person like this. -

Finally joined the user group; can't believe I missed State V.
Ridin Dirty is the best UGK album, but Super Tight is the most fun. Can anyone name a rap album that's still menacing but sounds so bright?

Great album but feels as though there's a few too many A&R fingerprints all over it. Still, it contains some of Gucci's best songs ever. Classical is a masterpiece. And then there's Heavy, Lemonade, Bingo, Wasted.

Surprisingly enough, this is one of those albums that I really haven't spent enough time with. It's definitely a great album, but I don't really know why I haven't listened to it much - and haven't for a while.
I plan on listening tomorrow, and I will update this post accordingly.Groovy Tony, Ordinary Joel, DKC and 1 other person like this. -

What I find most fault in Summer Knights is the lack of focus & energy through a couple stretches on the tape; at times it feels like you're listening to one big song. I don't rate Joey that high as a rapper and while it's easy for me to dismiss the sound as meager revivalist music, I can't help but find myself vibing to a few tracks on here, there's something distinctly nostalgic about Summer Knights. I rate 1999 higher but I could have seen this one being a better project with some trimming.Maad City, DKC, Big Dangerous and 1 other person like this. -

@RateThisAlbum I picked this out of Soldier's suggestions because it got more mixed reception upon release, so I'm interested to see what people think of it now.

Definitely a very important album for hip-hop as a whole. It has some of Dre's best songs on it as well, the chemistry between Snoop and Dre is perfect and they are one of my favorite duo's in rap.
There are a few filler tracks on it but f--- With Dre Day, Nuthin But a G Thang, Let Me Ride, and Lil Ghetto Boy are classic tracks. Great songs to play in the car on a nice sunny day. I've always liked The Chronic better than 2001.Ordinary Joel, Mike02, Michael Myers and 1 other person like this. -

Anybody who doesn't have this and rates it 1/10 needs to stop listening to hip-hop immediately. This is a production classic and an influential record that DEFINED the west coast.

8/10 this album is a little overrated but its still great, YG showed more mic presence than most newschool rappers but allowing mustard to produce the whole album was a bad idea, sounded like one long song.Michael Myers, Giraffe, gorealsteady and 1 other person like this. -
