Mar 10, 2015 Haven't had much time to set aside to listen to this ydt..taking the day off to rest so maybe today
Mar 11, 2015 I think 8.7 sounds about right. I can't echo enough what everyone else said: it's a definite classic that often gets overlooked in favor of ATCQ and De Las Soul, but I'd rate it up there with the best of them. Extremely fun album that always puts me in a good mood. Last call for ratings while I think of the next album!
Mar 11, 2015 Based upon 5 ratings, SectionEighty gives 93 'til Infinity an 8.7 (d--- my score was right on the average again). Mar 12, 2015 Good album about selling crack and doing it with style and some cool punchlines. It's kinda hard to recognise who is who on the mic, as Pusha and Malice had yet to become distinct characters and work more on their flow and delivery. Instead, they rap with equal skill (and sometimes, sound) and make this an entertaining record. Some songs could have been better, but don't really hurt the album that much. Neptunes' production is generally good (with some great beats here and there, like Grindin' and Virginia), and fits perfectly with the brothers' vocals; Pharrell's contribution doesn't stop there, as he drops 2 great hooks. The record showes glimpses of both Clipse's and Neptunes' greatness and is a solid debut, but most of the times I'd rather listen to their second album, h--- Hath No Fury. I do enjoy Lord Willin' when I listen to it (and I had to do so today) but HHNF is just easily better. I'll give this a 7/10 @BigCountry I didn't get the notification for your mention and I guess that the same has happened with the other guys? Not sure though.
Mar 12, 2015 I mean I'm sure about myself because I checked the latest alerts, not sure if they generally didn't work. I think that if you edit your post, the mentions don't work but I might be mistaken.
Mar 12, 2015 Nah I don't get the mentions either, usually check this thread casually or see it on the sidebar. 7/10 - The one thing that sticks out about this one is that you can see the potential the Thorton brothers + Neptunes had but it never truly materialized for the full length, some parts just don't capture you. The standouts here are fantastic and it sounds almost like nothing that was out in that time. We should try another 90's album for the next edition. Something that might be more widely known like one of Jay's Vol.1,2,3 maybe?
Mar 12, 2015 Yeah didn't get a notification either. That said, 8.5. Been a long time since I've listened to the whole thing so it might be a little higher or lower than that but it's a really great album. Great production from The Neptunes (they really couldn't do much wrong in the early 2000s), and Clipse were one of the best rap duos to ever touch a mic. That said, it doesn't really have the same focus and cohesion as their second album and the verses aren't near the caliber they'd later reach (at least not consistently). That Grindin beat nostalgia though.
Mar 12, 2015 Highkey mad i didnt see this thread when the cilvia demo one was up. Anyways ghat woulda been a solid 9 for me. I always loved the grittyness of clipse rapping (especially pusha). Just something about it that made it stand out. The prod on this is so energetic too, it's such a fun listen. It might be a cliche thing to point out with these dudes but the only thing id say about this is the subject matter can get monotonous. Other than that great listen id say 7.5/10.
Mar 12, 2015 I wasn't getting notifications of responses either. Weird. I'm copy and pasting the mentions with the code, but they still might not be working for some reason. Anyway, I'm probably a little bit biased because I love Clipse so much, but I'd give Lord Willin' an 8.8/10. I wanted to give it a 9, but I couldn't quite do it due to how indistinguishable Pusha and Malice are at times and because Famlay Freestyle exists. I love every other song on the album and the production is top notch. I knew I was listening to something different when I first heard the Intro's instrumental start as Pusha said "Players we ain't the same I'm into 'caine and guns." It amazes me how they managed to make a significantly better album after this one. It's unfortunate that Till the Casket Drops wasn't very good and Push has been pretty hit or miss solo. My Name is My Name could have been phenomenal.
Mar 13, 2015 Haven't been getting mention notifications for this thread, which sucks. I'd give Lord Willin' a 9/10, though. I'm a huge Clipse fan, so that may be a little generous, but this is one of the best coke rap albums of all time. It's nowhere near h--- Hath No Fury, but it's a very entertaining album
Mar 14, 2015 7/10. Their second album was better and their third was better than that. One of the few groups to get better with each album.
Mar 14, 2015 Such a great album. You could argue the toss between this and HHNF. They're both very good Coke Rap albums - I feel as this was a prototype to what became HHNF though. It's not as polished. 8/10
Mar 25, 2015 Bumping to revive this now that the kendrick hype died. Let's get a few more ratings for Clipse and then I'll move onto something else.
Mar 25, 2015 Based upon 8 ratings, SectionEighty gives Lord Willin' a 7.9 Just got into this album a few days ago, so I'ma put this up to revive this thread: [3/25/15] Cozz - Cozz & Effect @Writers @Flacko @Meero @Fire Squad @Five Star @Pixel @Tha Story @Acid Sav @Rick C @BroadStBully2 @Piiizzy @WPG @Bleed @Radeem @Term-X @Creation @Gamba Mamba @Maad City @sindy @Griff @Grimace @Raziel @Dew @Swizz @Fazers @Jet @Olorin @Winter @poop dogg @Joshua Smoses @Jay @Rodamon @Lamont @LukeS80 @JCinator @neomerge I retyped the mention list to see if it will work now that the mod was reinstalled. Let me know if you want to be removed.
Mar 25, 2015 A light 7, starts off strong and kind of fades off near the middle to end. I f---s with him as an artist tho he has potential.
Mar 25, 2015 BTW I forgot to mention that I won't count the rating toward the average unless you write a sentence or two about it. I don't mean to to call you out, I'm just tryina get some discussion started rather than a bunch of people posting ratings.
Mar 25, 2015 Got the mention this time 7.3/10 - Clocking in at barely 40 mins its a short but worthwhile listen. He's interesting enough to keep you into the music and is a decent lyricist, production is subtle but compliments it as a whole. Like someone mentioned before it's similar to a TDE project.
