Jul 8, 2016 7.5/10 I actually prefer this mixtape over 1999. It's a very nostalgic project for me of when I was on a cruise 3 years back. There are a lot of highlights for me including Trap Door, 95 Till Infinity, and Reign which are my top 3. While there aren't any songs I dislike on here, I would score it higher if it was shortened and more condense.
Jul 8, 2016 7.4/10 need to listen to this again. But this is my least played out if his tapes. Doesn't change the fact, joey does his thing.
Jul 8, 2016 8.4 Joey's second best tape imo. He's improved from a rapping standpoint and beat selection standpoint. This was the start of him getting away from that golden age hip hop influence. So much high school nostalgia. Also 95 til infinity 1st verse was one of the best verses of the year that year
Jul 8, 2016 It was like 357 in the afternoon and it just hit me like an epiphany...all these n----s is f---in wack... yo when did rap turn into a fashion show...
Jul 9, 2016 Kinda surprised at how positive of ratings this has gotten so far, I remember listening to it once and thinking it was trash and most people not liking it. Haven't gotten the chance to give this another spin yet but I got a 2 hr drive tomorrow so I'll throw this on.
Jul 9, 2016 7.5/10 Although I like 1999 and B4.DA.$$ more, this is still a solid tape. I still play it quite often though.
Jul 9, 2016 For the most part I don't get the joey hate, but admittedly I haven't listened to enough 90s records to determine if he's doing his own thing with the style or just rehashing it wholesale. Either way I think 1999 is solid but SK, like B4DA$$, just doesn't do much for me beyond a few songs. I haven't relistened to the record in a minute so this is a tentative score but I'd put it in the ballpark of 5.5.
Jul 9, 2016 This is why I like Joey so much though. New music can have an old or vintage style, but Joey Bada$$ could literally be placed back in the 90s right in the thick of rap and thrive. He doesn't bite (ala Logic for example) and steal flows or anything, he's just literally a rapper in the wrong time period.
Jul 9, 2016 6.8 What I find most fault in Summer Knights is the lack of focus & energy through a couple stretches on the tape; at times it feels like you're listening to one big song. I don't rate Joey that high as a rapper and while it's easy for me to dismiss the sound as meager revivalist music, I can't help but find myself vibing to a few tracks on here, there's something distinctly nostalgic about Summer Knights. I rate 1999 higher but I could have seen this one being a better project with some trimming.
Jul 9, 2016 Probably give it a 6. It was a pretty good release, but it lack any sort of cohesion. It's sounds like what it is: a hand full of remixes and some leftovers that didn't make 1999 or B4DA$$.
Jul 9, 2016 That's exactly why I wanted to do this one. Pretty much everyone liked 1999. 90s diehards love B4DA$$, people who only listen to 2010s rap hated it, and most everyone else thought it was decent. I didn't have any idea what the general consensus on Summer Knights was so that's why I picked it out of @Soldier's suggestions.
Jul 12, 2016 Summer Knights shows a lot of progression rapping- and maturity-wise, but doesn't quite match up to B4DA$$ in that sense and is missing an element of fun that made 1999 and Peep the APROcalypse so endearing. It's an OK album that you'll enjoy if you're a big Joey fan, but it's not something I'd find myself revisiting much. 6/10
Jul 12, 2016 Based upon 15 ratings, SXN80 gives Summer Knights a 7.1. @RateThisAlbum [7/12/16] Nas - It Was Written [1996]
Jul 12, 2016 classic Album, more poppy than Illmatic but Nas makes it work. Nas is coming is probably one of my favorite Nas songs, I really wish Nas and Dre would have done more. 9.8/10
