Jul 14, 2016 I listened to this album twice yesterday and it all came flooding back to me. At times, this album feels like Nas' victory lap following the reception Illmatic had. At other times, this has some of Nas' grittiest raps. The balance between the two couldn't have been better. The production could be considered as a step down from Illmatic, but Nas was on top form throughout the album. Quiet possibly one of the best sophomore albums in Hip Hop. 9/10
Jul 14, 2016 9/10 Really fell in love with this album when I was younger and it has lots of great memories for me. I used to prefer it over Illmatic. It's definitely a close second for me now though. It's a fantastic album front to back with many songs I listen too often. Affirmative Action became one of my favorite songs because it used to be first alphabetically out of the songs on my phone and would come up first to play when I would connect it to my car.
Jul 15, 2016 9/10 A much more mature and polished album from Nas. The music on It Was Written sounded more ambitious and the album itself was cinematic. My favorite tracks would have to be The Message, I Gave You Power, Nas Is Coming, and my favorite The Firm track, Affirmative Action.
Jul 23, 2016 Listened to this a week or so ago but forgot to rate. As someone mentioned earlier, it's crazy that this was considered "selling out" back then by some people. It's a lot more accessible than Illmatic, but that doesn't take away from it. It might no be the perfect 10 quintessential rap album Illmatic is, but it's a more-than-worthy successor. It's hard to argue against an album with The Message, If I Ruled the World, and Affirmative Action. 9/10
Jul 23, 2016 Based upon 15 ratings, SXN80 gives It Was Written a 9.1. @RateThisAlbum In honor of Gucci's first album since his release from prison: [7/23/16] Gucci Mane - The State vs. Radric Davis [2009]
Jul 23, 2016 Great album but feels as though there's a few too many A&R fingerprints all over it. Still, it contains some of Gucci's best songs ever. Classical is a masterpiece. And then there's Heavy, Lemonade, Bingo, Wasted. 7.5/10 Burr
Jul 23, 2016 The project has some great songs like Lemonade and Worst Enemy on it but most of them are just alright-good. The Wayne & Cam verses on Stupid Wild are a highlight of the tape for me as well. I'll give it a 7/10. It's more of a solid collection of Gucci songs and wasn't as broad or hard hitting as the mixtapes he was releasing during that period.
Jul 24, 2016 Bumping so I don't forget about this again. Also v disappointed only two people have heard this so far.
Jul 24, 2016 7.0 I haven't played this in years until yesterday. It could have been a better project if you got rid of the filler and blatant commercial reaches. The peaks on this album are awesome, contrary to popular belief Guwop has a lot of range and is one of the most engaging characters on the mic; his drawl is infectious and he can flow and sound good on anything.
Jul 24, 2016 10/10 just because of Lemonade and Wasted. Actually though it was a pretty decent album with a little too much filler and one of the worst features oat from OJ. 7/10
Jul 27, 2016 I have a lot of great memories of this album cuz it came out my freshman year of college. As many have said, there's a little too much A&R fuckery/filler on here, but otherwise it could have been his best project due to classics like Lemonade, Wasted, Classical, etc. 7.8/10
Jul 27, 2016 Based upon 7 ratings, SXN80 gives The State vs. Radric Davis a 7.5. @RateThisAlbum [7/27/16] UGK - Super Tight [1994]
Jul 27, 2016 7/10, it's pretty much solid throughout but it's not their best work. I also think parts of the album sound dated
Jul 27, 2016 I need to relisten before rating cus i never revisit this project for sum reason. I remember production on this being way better than their debut tho. And it had feds in town which is vintage bun
Jul 27, 2016 I haven't listened to this in years, will give it a spin within the next day or two and come back.
