    MTY VERY SHALLOW LISTENING

    Jul 30, 2016
    7/10

I absolutely hated Owl Pharaoh whenever it came out as it ended up being my worst album of 2013. In retrospect it sort of feels like the PC Music equivalent of trap music, turning up the production a couple tenfolds but without a big personality behind it. However, Trav made some huge improvements on this project but getting off the production boards and letting better producers handle the beats and generally improving his rapping and songwriting. There's a couple of duds on here (mostly in the second half w/ Zombies, Basement Freestyle, and Grey) but overall is a very solid project and served as a nice stepping stone into Rodeo, which is even better.

Is it a collection of songs put in a specific order and marketed by the artist as one entity?

    Lol u wanna read. anyway.

Songs b--- a--- um Travi$ has dope vocals features like Thug and Migos just murder s---. Good memories with this project I still listen 2 it after like a year after first bumping it. Dope unique production feels like a haunted halloween park anthem. Dope music videos as well monstrous autotune whole album has a dark nighttime vibe I just f---ing like it subjectively.

Production is amazing. His verses are decent but the features are great. I see this as a pretty good appetizer for Rodeo. 8/10

Literally flawless. Travis masterfully constructed a relentless, gritty, and downright immaculate piece of art with DBR.

A decent project from start to finish. I prefer Owl Pharaoh by a larger margin but I've listened to DBR quite a few times in the past year or so. 6.5/10

Travis was about as close as you can get to making a perfect mixtape and this is so nostalgic to me. Production is amazing. Has simp songs and turn up and chill songs. Some of travis's best rapping and lyrics to date. Personally I prefer this over rodeo

Going into DBR, I'd skimmed through Owl Pharaoh but wasn't really familiar with Travis beyond the name and a few good takeaways (mainly h--- Of A Night.) I guess you could say I was the same way with trap, and in even broader terms rap as a whole. I think that was a large factor in why I found myself so fascinated with DBR. At the time, The Prayer wasn't a beefed-up Throw Sum Mo beat Ft. Travis, it was an entirely new sound. Skyfall wasn't Spaghetti Factory featuring a more restrained Thugger, it was an anthem, and so on and so forth. In the time since, I've dived into the work of his contemporaries and influences (which aren't mutually exclusive) and my respect has shifted off of Travis and onto those who Travis emulates. For what it's worth, I think Travis has an almost kanye-like ability to draw big stars on and off the mic to create great songs, but he's almost never the main star in his own show. And as with OP and Rodeo, it shows. Sloppy Toppy is a great Migos Ft. Peewee Longway joint with Travis awkwardly mimicking them for the first minute. Outside of background vocals, he adds nothing to Mamacita or Skyfall. With the exception of Grey, you could take out travis' parts and swap them out with any of the artists Travis has worked with and it would be a better song. But despite Travis' shortcomings as an artist, the final output is greater than the sum of its parts. This is where I disagree with bc or wpg, I think the music itself is actually quite enjoyable, it's just that next to none of that is due to Travis.

Tldr despite Travis being (mostly) bad, the songs themselves are still dope. 6.5/10

Major improvement over Owl Pharaoh, but not as good as Rodeo. Production throughout the project is amazing, the features are incredible and the tracklists full of bangers. Travis himself still hadn't really come into his own just yet, I feel as though he did on Rodeo. That being said, this is a really good project, 7.5/10.

    10/10

Rodeo was the first "trap" album I listened to ever and I fell in love with it to the point where it became my favourite album of all time. One of the main reasons it took me at least 5 months to get into his previous works cause I was afraid that his other s--- might not hold up to it and would stain my impression of him as a perfect artist.

    Luckily DBR delivers.

This project displays what he's capable of as an artist instead of taking a back seat role like he did on (most of the tracks) rodeo. Its pretty obvious he bites from other people but imo s--- like that shouldn't affect your judgement on the final product itself but I believe he has a talent for taking a quality of another artist and improving upon it instead of just producing a desiigner esque product. For example: Drugs You Should Try owes its vocals to kid cudi, but there hasn't been a single cudi song that can top Drugs. Same with Grey. The Prayer's and Backseat Freestyle's are very similar to that of Throw Some Moe and Pixalated tears but i'd rather listen to Travis vocals on a song than Rae sremmurd or bones.
Top it off with some amazing production and Travis' signature vocal effects and you have a 10/10 project.
