It seems that the iPhone 7 won’t be the only flagship smartphone to ditch the 3.5mm headphone socket: SamMobile is reporting ‘confirmation’ of an earlier rumor that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 – set to be unveiled in February – will follow Apple’s lead.

The move is said to be in an effort to make the device thinner while allowing for a larger battery. The report says that Samsung will use a USB-C port for charging and data transfers, and it’s likely this will also be available to those who want to continue using wired headphones.

The S8 is also said to be adopting a feature long-rumored for next year’s iPhone: replacing the physical Home button with a virtual one embedded into the display.

Apple’s ‘courageous’ decision to ditch the headphone socket of course generated a great deal of controversy. By the time Samsung does the same, it’s likely that a lot of the fuss will have died down as increasing numbers of consumers switch to wireless headphones.

Samsung’s S8 will be an especially important launch for the company following its disastrous recall and abandonment of the Note 7.

Lol at "courageous" Motorola did it first with the Moto Z. I still think it's f---ing stupid and wouldn't want a phone without one. Regular headphones sound>>>>>bluetooth

who cares who did it first :laff:

for a phone to have 15% market share and ditch an "essential" peripheral is bold by any measure.

point is it's a tradeoff for slimmer phones and bigger batteries. granted, i don't know what this translates to in terms of hours of usage, but i'll take the longer battery life over a headphone jack.

especially considering these phones ship with an adapter that you can permanently plug in to your headphones anyways.

really, unless you've got multiple pairs of headphones you're using then i don't really see the drawback.

my main issue with the headphoneless fiasco is it being able to play music and hate your phone at the same time

buttttt it's being rumored you'll be able tobliterally wirelessly charge the iphone 8 as long as you're in the same room as the charger.....so if that lul rumor is true then we gucci

lol I have an iMac and an iPod. I'm not anti apple, they just get a s--- load of praise for s--- they didn't come up with. It really did hurt them though. I know a lot of people with iPhones who wouldn't upgrade. I'm guessing most phones are going to go this route eventually. Just not the biggest fan of losing the headphone jack. The adapter that comes with it is flimsy as h--- too.

I mean this is actually a step in the right direction for Samsung given that the last feature on their phones was to blow up

I will make more use out of an improved battery than a headphone jack. if it genuinely allows for a better battery I'm all for it. however if it's simply to make money, which is the primary goal of every business, I'd rather they just keep the wired earphones

i just don't really pay attention to the praise or flack apple gets anymore. after steve jobs passed, i don't think anyone can call them innovators anymore.

tim cook set the precedent with the apple watch when he said "we don't have to be first, we just have to do it right." did you guys even do that? does anyone use that s---?

but imo the smartphone industry ditching the headphone jack isn't a terrible move (for the reasons i stated in that earlier post).

this is also coming from someone who hasn't used a headphone jack on his phone since late 2015

raised a bunch of f---ing dickheads with imacs that say "oh coco you know about computers, fix my overpriced piece of s--- bro"
even though it was submerged in water, or some bs.

I've done IT support helpdesk work before. This one guy calls my office and I usually don't answer phones, just respond to call-outs. but i answer cause im the only one there and im like "wtf?" the entire time. dudes saying all this weird fucken s--- and i'm trying my best to be polite like "ok sir your wifi isn't working correct? can you got to the bottom left of the screen and right click properties of the wireless you're connected to?"

dudes f---ing saying "oh i cant see it, im not sure what you're talking about, i'm not sure if i can right click" i get f---ing furious that someone elses stupidity is wasting my time so i pause for 1 min, take a deep breathe to compose myself and say "ok mate, i'll be out there shortly to have a look"

is that dudes f---ing mac laptop s--- from home. It's a fucken Mac. I say to him it's a mac...

    "All the same aren't they?"

was so pissed I just said "it's actually against the law for anyone other than IT employees to bring their own laptops/computers etc from home and connect them to the network. Sorry i thought you were talking about your work PC" then i f----- off as fast as possible
