Apr 7, 2020Day 51: TDE Week Day 2
Blank Face is a sprawling west-coast gangsta thesis; theres features from E-40, Tha Dogg Pound, rich, funky instrumentals, guns, b------s, g--- signs galore. There's Q, chest thumping bravado juxtaposed with prayers to the lord. It only make sense that the spirit of Pac makes its way onto the tracklist in the form of Str8 Ballin, where Q stakes a step back to soak it all in - rags to riches. Picture him rollin now.

DAY 50: TDE Week Day 1
50 days! I'm surprised I've kept this going as long as I have. Its become part of my morning ritual. Wake up, grab a coffee, post whatever I'm listening to before I spend the next 10 hours in an Excel/Zoom coma. But time to switch up a bit. Somehow I found myself delving back into the TDE roster's output recently, starting off with Kendrick's 2017 d---. Its been ages since I've listened to this and it has aged like fine wine. Lust has been sticking out to me on recent listens - I don't think I appreciated it as much before - its such a weirdly brilliant, typically Kendrick song that is so cleverly structured and written, catchy and still seamlessly ties into the album's overarching theme.Xmipod, Ordinary Joel and Zeugma like this. -

Day 43:
Fivio Foreign has been teasing his tentatively titled 'B.I.B.L.E.' album, meant to drop sometime in April, for some time now. Blxky in a Box - a scathing diss aimed at 22Gz (i think?), is the best of the singles he's dropped so far (although Wetty which dropped last week is up there too). Fivio hasn't clicked for me like Pop Smoke, 22 Gz, Sheff G, etc have just yet, but backed by an exceptionally ominous sounding AXL beat, and flanked by fellow Brooklynites Jay Dee and Dee Savv (no relation), Fivie sounds like he's beginning to find his sweet spot.Xmipod, Zeugma and Ordinary Joel like this. -

Day 38
It is one of the greatest travesties in hip hop history that this opus never made it on to any of Sosa's official albums or even mixtapes. The gothic war-chant, the creeping violin threaded through the background would have slotted perfectly onto BFTD2. But hey who knows what kind of chaos a project with this and Faneto would been.Xmipod, Ordinary Joel and Zeugma like this. -

Day 36
Virginia native $ilkmony has a thing for weird album (and song) titles. Africa is the first single of his sophomore effort released in 2019, entitled: Get the f--- Off My d-ck: There's Not Enough Room For All You Motha Fuckas To Be On It Like This (which features a few gems like 'My d-ck Too Small' and 'The Day Waffle House Broke My Heart'). $ilk switches from hilarious and self-deprecating to deadly serious and downright scary writing, curling in and around a lo-fi-ish, tribal sounding haze of a beat, switching his flows however he seems to feel at the start of the bar. Fans of the chaotic, in-your-face styles of JPEGMAFIA, absolutely check this guy out.Xmipod, Zeugma and Ordinary Joel like this. -

also maybe the mixtapish vibe of the funeral has always fit wayne better, if that makes sense. his whole prime is made of spontaneous highlights, strikes of pure genius, not polished masterpiecesAltereagle416, Sav Stanfield and Ordinary Joel like this. -

Day 35
NLE Choppa popped seemingly out of nowhere in early 2019 with Shotta Flow, drawling a barrage of threats over a filthy distorted bass and haphazard piano key loop that is so simple but so loaded with high-octane in-your-face energy that its strength alone has propelled him to the heights of major-release guest lists and Spotify playlists over the course of the last 12 months. With a big co-sign from Birdman, a series of equally energetic (but maybe not as effective) singles and, an EP and a larger-than-life Louisianan/Tennessean presence, this is only the beginning. I'm curious to see what his debut album, supposedly dropping any day now, brings.Ricky, Ordinary Joel and Zeugma like this. -

Day 28
I wasn't too impressed with J.I.D's debut The Never Story tape, the dude can rap his a--- off but wasn't doing much to differentiate himself or make his music interesting. DiCaprio 2, released the following year changed my mind entirely, and this song - featuring another emcee who I've recently done a complete 180 on - J. Cole - is more that enough evidence that not only is J.I.D. insanely talented and has a technical mastery few can match, but can make some seriously entertaining music at the same.Xmipod, Ricky and Ordinary Joel like this. -
