Dec 4, 2020 This 100% I do like certain 'new' artists, some even a lot, but I really don't get the appeal for some stuff people praise on here (or elsewhere online). I guess it is age related
Dec 4, 2020 yeah like, listen, its important imo to keep up with new music, artists, trends. im not saying stay in place and pretend its 2003 lol. but at the same time i remember last xmas going over to my sisters, and my BIL getting drunk and blasting post malone. (hes like.... 40). now, we all know pm sucks, but still the visual over a very middle aged dude jamming to such a gen z shithead just struck me as a bit pathetic. parse from that what u will
Dec 4, 2020 Post malone doesn't seem to be as bad as a Tekashi 69 or a Lil Pump but I know where you're coming from. I won't list the long number of relatively new artists I think are trash because I know a lot of people here are fans of them.
Dec 4, 2020 I get what you mean in terms of forcing yourself to try to keep up with new music to force being cool or whatever, but at the same time...who cares? Yeah besides a few catchy singles Post Malone sucks but I genuinely love artists like Playboi Carti (and he certainly has more fans under 30 than over, probably under 25 than over 25 even). I'd respect a 40 year old for blasting playboi carti instead of pretending he didn't like it because he felt like he was too old for it.
Dec 4, 2020 Also, re: charisma. I think any lack of charisma is less to do with rap specifically and more to a celeb/artist generation that's meticulously PR/social media managed. I miss when every celebrity twitter account was like this:
Dec 4, 2020 if I have kids I hope to embarrass them some day by playing dusty grandpa rap like NBA Youngboy and Lil Keed.
Dec 4, 2020 sure i mean ppl can do what they want lol. hard to rebut "who cares" i think - without triggering u by terming 'mumble rap' - alot of the new stuff frankly feels like a new genre to me . diff spirit and origin (kids using social media to blow up, rather than the wild west drug legends of ole or w/e).. which i also guess separately is why grammys made that melodic rap category. and again thats cool that u/others f--- w it, and have ur ear pierced and ride a harley, but its just not something i rly seek out, while staying generally mindful of its existence.
Dec 4, 2020 I just meant like why is it pathetic for a 40 year old man specifically to get drunk and blast post malone (it's pathetic for everyone regardless of age ). I don't have any problem with people not liking melodic trap/rap, like I don't think my mom would even recognize playboi carti as music lol. What I do have a problem with is the otherization of it, which is why the mumble rap label bothers me. It's the attitude people (not saying you) have that they're somehow above or better than that music (a lot of these people will s--- on like young thug but like post malone lol). Don't get me wrong, a lot of mainstream rap is much much different than it used to be, but you can still trace clear lineage from Lil Keed to Young Thug to Lil Wayne pretty easily. We had people like Devin the Dude and 50 and Nelly and even Em in a lot of respects (and prob further back than that that I can't think of off the top of my head lol) harmonizing and making more melodic songs/hooks...and even as recently as Drake with Take Care and NWTS old head rap fans wanted to call him R&B and not hip-hop because he didn't fit into their box. It's certainly a different type or subgenre of hip-hop, but it's still under the umbrella of hip-hop imo.
Dec 4, 2020 At this point, sure, but I think it would be disingenuous to say Drake isn't a rapper regardless of your opinion on him. I've always thought his best stuff was when he balanced rap with r&b instead of straying too hard to appease fans of either side.
Dec 4, 2020 eh agree to disagree. most of the time id characterize him as a pop artist who happens to rap
Dec 4, 2020 I second this. Let's be honest, this isn't going to be anywhere classic, but there are definitely going to be some bangers and fun tracks on it, so call me in. And I'm always in for that whole west coast g-funk sound. I think Snoop is also constantly putting out some bangers here and there between loads of fillers and whatever, but yeah...they're all still capable of bringing some fun to the table.
Dec 4, 2020 20 years ago this would have been epic. ill give it a spin though. It’s cool some old school legends still doing it linked up. No hi standards for this . But it’s cool
Dec 4, 2020 I worked at a Ledo's pizza back in hs. I'll never forget when a customer called and complained about hearing, "My name is too short and I got a big d-ck, that's why I dug out your b----". Were playing it too loud back in the kitchen lol
