I grew up in Bennington Vermont. I was like 20 minutes between either NY or MA. My family is from upstate NY, but I moved to VT in the late 90s and that’s where I grew up until I was out of school then I’ve bounced around the country since.

my cousin lived out there (anchorage) for a couple years and loved it. by happenstance, i ended up needing to travel there for work a few times and had her show me around. beautiful spot, tons of hikes (obviously), and more outgoing / less-desolate as I anticipated it being.

most memorable: went to a bar (it was actually a large pulltab spot where old folks hung out all day wishing their retirement monies away) and they had "rat roulette". what's rat roulette? glad you asked: it's a 5ft diameter roulette wheel and rather than the slits between the numbers on the wheel, they have tennis ball sized holes cut out; and rather than a ball, they use a hamster.... they had a full wall of hamster cages that they would rotate in and out and they would put the hamster on the giant wheel, spin it, and then whichever number's hole the hamster dizzily tumbled into was the marker.
...basically, a PETA nightmare, but was pretty much the most alaska thing i experienced.
