Not from a technical aspect. It's sound basically the entire way through. As a huge fan of Thug, this is too restrained for me compared to like Rich g--- tha tour pt. 1

Also, every track on this album works flawlessly in a vacuum, but as a whole, I do wish the production had more Metro Boomin, Zaytoven type credits. Thug really is without flaw/worthy of unanimous praise throughout though.

Id personally rate this like a 9.3 or something, TPAB being like a 9, and Beast Mode around an 8.8. My top 3 of the year so far. And out of all these, TPAB might be the one Im overrating tbh lol

:idk: I agree for the most part. I Just feel like there's some displays of bad/lazy writing throughout the project that takes away from the thing as a whole. Probably one of the main reason a lot of people refuse to even give him a chance. I'm sure I don't need to list any specific lines, but they are definitely sprinkled throughout most songs.
Writing is a big criteria and I feel like that is a big weak point when it comes to his music.

Why? Like, I really want to know why. I am trying to get into his music and while I think he is enjoyable, it is not clicking with me as much as I expected.

For sure, but writing is also weirdly seen as having more weight than all other aspects of music (not from you, but in general). And that's just not true. Thug's writing is wholly unique to him -- its his upbringing, influences, and unfiltered thought process all at once. Just because its humorous, or low brow at times, doesnt stop it from being utterly personal at it's best and always entertaining/clever.

His writing itself is also underrated -- almost no one can make a verse as concise and catchy as this man. ill know all the words to a supposedly "unintelligible" passage with in a day because of how well it coincides with his melody and overall execution.

good writing means different things for different contexts

"Young Thug’s writing works as a free-form stream of consciousness, often times making way more sense than you ever want to give it credit for. There will be articles on all the pop-stars he name drops before long (Akon, Kid Cudi, Meek Mill, and Wiz Khalifa included — the last of whom already answered his call to action). It’s the same kind of colorful imagery and fanciful commentary that we collectively praise a rapper like Action Bronson for—just executed differently. "

it's imaginative, it's vivid, it's hilarious, it's heartfelt, etc. Thug shows so much more range, even on this album, than anyone ever feels comfortable giving him credit for. Which isn't fair.

The same guy that says "she ran from my weed like it farted," will pen "Im an angel in the sky -- I look down on the drive bys"

I credit him for never pandering in any way, always presenting a personal POV when writing. So much so that you need literally dive into his leaned out mind to start getting better acquainted

There's definitely some lines that arent clever at all though. They actually come across as unnecessary and like I said before, lazy writing. This isn't just me either, I think a lot of people feel this way.
That weed line is one of the ones that definitely stood out to me. I don't find it clever or that it really does anything to make that a good verse. There's others like "ps3, im not playin" that just seem cheap and like they were included just to include a pun.

To me it touches on the idea of the first half of that line implying drug use/being the clouds mentality, but on the track its from, it comes off as him also saying he doens't take part in the violence itself/even looks down on it. so yeah.

i think this is the problem with a lot of thug's writing resonating with a wide audience -- its easily dismissible if you're not invested in the persona. but so are numerous other rapper's content. thug goes beyond that tho and makes it even more difficult with how he incorporates the slang he was raised on.

what exactly do you want to fault thugs writing for? this is open to anyone btw, @JCinator

i dont know enough to rly respond, im just curious what makes him stand out? not saying ur wrong, although that particular lyric doesnt do anything for me. like, when i listened to earl's record, you could tell there was a deftness to the writing, a certain tightness. after 1.5 listens to thugger, i'm not getting the same vibe. could just be me tho

no, they're usually included to complete a melody or flow, which i think is much more excusable than the more traditional rappers who WOULD do it just for a s-----y punchline lol. like i said, context matters. but then again authorial intent means nothing if it doesnt translate well to the audience. but contrary to popular believe, thug requires CLOSER inspection of his lyrics to buy into his train of thought, not the people who approach it with a dismissive attitude.

he once told an entire story for a guest verse about how he told his b---- to keep the weed down in the car cause the 5-0 would notice it. and its one of my favorite verses by him, to date. content doesnt always matter as much as you're making it seem m8. I can see how it would be a turn off, but I cant objectively discredit him for it because it's not as simple as that

And those "a lot of people" you're citing -- do you think they're really credible sources to place thug in context? Im actually asking, because I dont know them. You're obviously gonna go in circles asking people who don't grasp the essence of Thug as an artist about his lyrics lol

Definitely not just you m8, no worries.

Different types of writing incite different reactions no? And it's also the execution of said writing that makes it good or bad rapping, right? I think when you take those two factors into account, it should become more clear.

Thug makes me feel euphoric, no hyperbole. He puts a smile on my face with the simplest of songs, like Check, simply based off his cadences and delivery. For him, his ad libs and dubs play almost as a big a role as the actual lyrics, so there's reading, literally, in between the lines to consider.

And I personally like how it's like one big puzzle thats ultimately just gonna turn out to be a portrait of Thug making some dumb a--- face flipping me off :laff: The process is exhilarating.
