See. @BigCountry @Modest @Enigma etc you guys say s--- like homophobia but let me remind you a h---------- was the one saying the stuff in OP and cyreides basically agrees. Pls read next time before saying stuff, I never said those parades are a bad thing, just that it gets them even more of a 'weird, different' label to an extent.

Cuz people shouldn't be punished for wanting to celebrate their culture or heritage? This implies that gay or black people should just assimilate into the dominant culture rather than celebrating their own when not everyone wants to do that. Like, should Chinese people not have Chinese new year parades? The point is that there's not really any reason for you to care whether or not any culture has parades. People want to be accepted without the total erasure of their culture.

I'm def not saying people should be punished for doing so. I think a lot of times these events can be a mix of pride (great) + an outlandish and/or in-your-face approach of saying "check us out!!" (not-so-great).

I know i'm not going to do a great job of articulating my thoughts on paper, but if there was an Italian American parade or some s---, then I wouldn't even consider participating (despite me being from the states and having an italian background). Not because I don't think your heritage should be cherished, but because I don't see the need to make a public display of it. I don't feel the need to push my culture on others around me -- because cumulatively/currently my neighbors and I are in one culture together now. That s--- is for me and my family...not to be paraded around in a loud fashion. And i wouldn't want someone else to shout their culture

I think OP hit it home with the gay parade example. Many of us have seen how over the top that can be at times. It doesn't offend me in any way, but I can't help but to think that the outlandish parading doesn't a.) accomplish anything, b.) may turn people away by driving stereotypes further, and c.) doesn't represent a large portion of the gay community -- most of h----------s are just like you and i and don't need to display a distinction like that, because while it's important to cherish your culture, it's counterintuitive when having a goal of having everybody be "everybody", as a single entity together.

i duno.. i'm sure i just butchered this, but i see both sides to it, but think there's a good and poor way to go about celebrating your culture. publicly shouting it at the top of your lungs or doing things for shock value really isn't the best way to approach it imo.
