Uhm ... yeah I guess so? The difference between being a hip hop artist and a rapper imo is the music so you can say Eminem is a better rapper than Ye but Ye is the better artist imo. I think Jay makes the best hip hop music, and a big part of that is his technical skills but when it comes to purely estimating technical skills I think thought is superior, although I think Jay makes better music than the roots, you feel me?

Idk just tired of hearing kanye (etc) isn't a good rapper but is a great artist. No, kanye is a great rapper because of how good he is at making rap music.

btw my answer to this is jay z , jay in my top 5 , bt is no 7

even if black thought is probably better than jay bar for bar , jay z is a lot more charismatic rapper , his mic presence is incredible and like everyone knows has one of the best signature flow oat
there are not many departments where jay lacks , perhaps storytelling , besides that he is very complete
bt may have a stale delivery at times but he is good in storytelling for example , very poetic i may say

bt the better spitter but i still prefer jay for his entire persona and also jay during the rd era could spit some ludicrous wordplay

There is no super ambiguous distinction its very clear and there is a reason to make it. Kanye can't outrap Eminem but he makes better music, so when someone asks me who can rap better I'm always gonna say Thought or Em. People constantly leave kanye out these arguments and if you put him in you look stupid, f--- that kanye is the GOAT hip hop artist but he's nowhere near the goat rapper.

Tbh it's hard to decide who's the better artist here. The Roots make artistic masterpieces with their every release while Jay sometimes falls short in that department. Though, to be fair, Jay did it all on his own. If we're talking about lyricism, that's also a pretty difficult department. RD era Jay was pretty much untouchable. But at the same time Black Thought has been consistently incredible throughout his career as a lyricist. Honestly, in terms of technical skill, Black Thought slightly edges out Jay. In terms of discography, it's The Roots. They're both pretty incredible. Jay is #5 on my list and Black Thought is #2

There's plenty of rappers who can spit they a--- off but can't make a good song, that doesn't mean they're a bad rapper it just means they ain't good at making music.
