“Technical ability” is dumb if kanye rapped in a double time alien voice like Kendrick it would be way less effective than what he does

But imo looking at rappers with categories like this like they’re 2K players is always dumb to me

    This is a good topic,

Now I grew up listening to 90's hip hop, I still remember the Chronic coming out and being mesmerised by it.

2pac is my favourite rapper of all time, the reason? Thats what I grew up with.

And at the end of the day, thats what it is all about, whatever you grow up listening to, you are going to be biased towards it, its natural to do so. So when I hear people talking about Kanye, Drake, Kendrick being the GOAT, I have no arguments with that, its just opinions at the end of the day.
For a while, I never listened to much else but 90s stuff but having a kid who also likes listening to hip hop, I listen to what he listens to and get a great understanding of what is relevant today and its opened up a new world of hip hop which I didnt listen to before.

So yeah, I don't understand the stigma either, I think Kanye may well be the GOAT

You don’t be objective tho he’s your favourite rapper of all time which is fine trying to convince people you’re “right” is pointless

When it comes to being the best rapper of all time I think it has to do with a lot more than just technical ability. I think technical ability is as much of an aspect of being the GOAT as subject matter, discography, delivery, voice, cultural impact and influence. 2Pac was good at all of these things, he had arguably the most meaningful content, a great voice, arguably the best delivery, and obviously the bigger impact but where he falls short is his discography, I don't think 2Pac has a better album than Biggie does. Ready to Die is a better album than any 2pac album. The Blueprint is better than Ready to Die and Good Kid Maad City is better than The Blueprint. Kendrick has arguably the greatest discography after Kanye west. Kanye's technical ability is what holds many against calling him the GOAT, Which leads me to believe technical ability is the most important aspect besides the music/discography itself. Kendrick doesn't have this issue though, he is technically great, his subject matter is that of Pacs, his conceptual-ism is unmatched. His voice is the only thing I can see anyone arguing against and voice is probably the least important aspect in the argument. I'm not saying Kendrick is the GOAT because I don't believe he is I believe Kanye and Jay have him beat when it comes to discography and technical ability, respectively, that barely put them over Kendrick given how good they both are at all other aspects as well. My question is why do people have an issue with admitting Kendrick may be better than Big/Pac and arguably the GOAT?

that is a valid answer since they haven't.
kanye absolutely is in the running for being GOAT. you can't lump kendrick/kanye together like that. Kanye changed rap 3 times single handedly and was actually far more helpful in bringing consciousness in hip hop (which i don't personally see as a positive) back into the mainstream than Kendrick by putting guys like lupe, common and talib on his albums the forefront of rap from CD-GD.

Kendrick doesn't belong on the same ballot as kanye.

People who say Kanye isn't in the conversation for the greatest of all time are the people whose opinions I told you you shouldn't take seriously earlier in the thread (if you actually read my post).

because you literally said in the OP that kendrick should be in the talk for being a GOAT, and he shouldn't. If you'd go back and reply to the post I made almost 2 hours ago about defining your metrics then I could help you further.

I'll put a tldr here for you here in case you don't feel like reading a lot again:

-People who have pac at #1 aren't being "objective". That's why they're unwilling to listen to anything being above him. Their opinions should be disregarded. These are likely the people posting "if pac was still alive lil wayne would work at mcdonalds" comments on youtube.

-The people who won't entertain Kanye being the GOAT are in the same boat. They're not being objective. I'm not even a huge fan of MBDTF myself, and I thought TLOP was downright mediocre but I can't deny how much he's accomplished. He's earned the right to be in the discussion of the greatest of all time. I wouldn't argue anyone who wants to say that he is.

-The people who won't entertain Kendrick as being the goat won't do so because Kendrick isn't the goat and none of his albums have stood the test of time yet or left a mark on rap in any meaningful way (aside from having the most cringeworthy track i've ever heard on an album with the tupac skit)

and that's another thing like @Kon pointed out. if you want to call him your favorite that's fine but don't try to argue that you want to be objective then contradict your own arguments for kendrick being the objective goat, and asking for a minimum amount of time is just silly.

i don't know. long enough that people don't make threads on hip hop sites and call him a new rapper i guess.

eminem is not a top 5 rapper by just about any objective metric outside of sales (and i'd listen to an argument about "technicality" if you had a definition) which really isn't a metric of being a good rapper, and if content is being looked at at ALL then it being corny is absolutely relevant to the conversation.

how do you define "technical" skill in rap anyway? because if we're gonna be talking about these made up terms that don't have objective definitions we'll need to define them for argument's sake.

do you mean just using multi-syllable rhymes or flow or what? i'm pretty sure that's not something most people would say pac was particularly gifted at. he wasn't a "technical" rapper, and i doubt many people would say he is but you yourself said that people are freaking out when you put kendrick over pac after saying that technicality is the most important skill.

if someone has pac at #1 but you think that being technical is the most important trait in a rapper then i guess you're arguing with people who don't listen to enough rap, if we're going to use your own metrics (again, strictly for argument's sake) of saying that that being technical is the most important part of the overall.

its like u gotta learn whos opinions to just disregard
being entitled to an opinion does not mean your opinion is valid on any given subject. you're allowed to have it but if you're uninformed on it then it doesn't count for d-ck.

a bunch of people say "i dont listen to rap, but eminem is by far the best rapper" like its asinine. stop talking to people with bad opinions, or at the very least, stop trying to convince them of things they don't understand.
