I haven't heard this thing in so many years, for those of you who remember this was a very divisive album in the rap community when it came out. It was like he stuck a middle finger at Like Water For Chocolate and every thing he made before--following what fellow Soulquarians The Roots did on Phrenology, he pushed the rap genre really with this one. And no don't bring up that atrocious Universal Mind Control album that s--- was a recycle bin classic

I remember I wasn't too big on this when I last heard it but something clicked when I decided to revisit this today. This song popped up in my shuffle and I forgot how dope it was. Any thoughts on this one or where do you rank it in Com's discography?

Be is one of my favorite 10 albums in a vacuum, I'd say UMC was his worst since he sounded so uninspired on that s--- and it was some of Pharell's worst work on there. I used to believe this one was hot dumpster trash years ago but this was a genuinely interesting album from a topical and sonic standpoint, give it a try again :wow2:

I always kinda liked this album and was surprised it got such negative reviews back in the day. I put it on for the first time in a few years recently and it's really good.

I think it had to do with at the time how different rap journalism was; a lot more sanctimonious and Rawkus was a huge critical darling (plus Common did some stuff for them). They didn't want to see Common go out and be weird I guess.

Crazy to think Outkast was doing this stuff on a crazier scale on Stankonia though
Yup, it's no Be or Like Water For Chocolate but I'm just curious to see how others perceive it on here

Solid release for sure, but I felt like that one was just an extended play of Be. Chicago was killing it during that time between Ye, Lupe The Cool Kids and Common 04-07
