I hate relapse btw but man it's a shame ppl s--- on it so much that it made him think it was awful, cause that was the last record where he really felt like a complete artist who had an agenda and knew what he was doing (even though what he was doing was imo bad)
Like if you relisten today, he did his own hooks and had skits with like real acting and s---. He put time into trying to make it something special and detailed
the man changed so much as an artist because everyone s--- on this album like he literally gave up as an actual ARTIST after Relapse
it's sad -

I think he just got the concept in his head, stumbled into a sound and followed the vision.
With knowingly wanting to re-create past glory in some way without repeating those sounds but go back to being fully outlandish and stop second-guessing his content by analysing himself (all of these his kinds of words from the time, not pure speculation) so much...
So he thinks Relapse, back to old style but also drug-related relapse... concept... the relapse becomes the fuel/reason for the horrorcore content. As he's on a rampage. It was a good concept and a big one, compared to what he's doing now, as you say - the last time he was an artist with an agenda - and he just went with it. He thought of the idea and carried it out in a big way.
It's just great, even the placement; the opening skit, going through the crazy relapse, then the Mr Mathers skit and waking up normal to analyse it @ Deja Vu. It was just very well made and structured. Wish he still thought like this.thunderface, Guma, DetroitDGAF and 9 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

I hate the fans who bitched about Relapse. Easily the most replay value of all of his post hiatus albums. Actually had a loose concept and felt like an actual f---ing album with returning skits from his old albums and everything. Then because people complained we never got Relapse 2 and instead got Recovery which isn’t bad but didn’t age nearly as well as it should have. Then everyone still bitched so on his last two albums we got a cluttered mess of all of his styles because he tries pleasing everyone now. Relapse and Recovery may not be anyone’s favorite Em albums but at least they felt like complete albums.Ids5621, David26, K18 El Duderino and 5 others like this. -

misguided attempt at reviving 98-99 slim shady. lyrical skills, musicality, ear for beats were still all intact but he just couldn't quite hit that same stride. lacking in lightheartedness, forced shock-tactics. Plus that stupid f---ing accent. I still prefer it to anything he's put out since and judging it strictly as a 'concept' horrorcore record, its actually stood the test of time pretty well, considering. that being said, there's no way in h--- its more than a 7/10. and thats on a generous day.n9ne, DetroitDGAF, dkdnfbdjdkdddjdjfvcgfl and 4 others like this. -

He made Relapse because he wanted to. If you listen to the interviews at the time, Em sounded genuinely happy. He's a bit of a corny loser in real life it appears, and he enjoyed every second recording Relapse. You can hear it in the music. The reactions he got shook this insecure man to his core. Shame. I'd rather him be weird and alienating than a pathetic, pandering snowflake.
Relapse is the most thematically rich album of his career. The way the character relapsing plays off the artist recovering is great. He clearly got a little too deep into it. No wonder it got so bizarre when the guy recorded over 100 songs, stretching the concept to breaking point. Deja Vu remains his best post-comeback song and one of his best overall. -

He didnt want to make a cry baby woe is me album about his addiction. Didn't want to wallow. Instead wanted to twist it on his head and just go crazy with the drug s---. -

with it being his comeback album and all what exactly was his ideology releasing a horrocore album with only like 2 or 3 real introspective tracks w/ a normal voice
I mean sure, ppl say its what he wanted to make and that's true but why did he want to make that? What was his rationale, surely he knew it was gonna be poorly received because of his audience and the fact that he hadnt made music like that at all, plus it was his return record..
its just so random and puzzles me tbh
