if you've heard it in the program before it's really hard to ignore, I remember that loop from f---ing around on there when I was like 15 and it just feels so out of place.

TPAB was an entire movement and in usual Kendrick fashion is a fully realized concept, I didn't like his performance in it as like in d--- or GKMC to be clear, but it's a truly ambitious effort...

None of these apply to T&Y, which isn't a bad album per say but it just feels more like Lupe forces schemes and metaphors to make it sound like some Illuminati-decoding s--- you find on YouTube. I love Lupe and he still has genuine moments of brilliance every now and then but that magic from F&L and The Cool have been long gone.

nah there's a big difference between falling in the pseudo-intellect category and the top tier lyricist category. Lupe is a fantastic lyricist. T&Y is however, the definition of pseudo-intellectual lyricism. just saying big words, having song concepts and double entendres doesnt make you a top tier lyricist. you have to be able to balance these things and make your raps easy to understand. thats why we hold Biggie in such high regard in lyricism. he wasnt talking bout complex s---. but the way he said it made him an amazing lyricist.

like i said i the OP, Lupe is great lyrically but his words and hidden messages are not as immediate and grabbing as TPAB. this makes him a less effective lyricist in the process of trying to be a good one. Kendrick knows when and how to balance lyricism and concepts. none of the concepts are hard to grasp on TPAB. Kendrick does a great job of delivering complex lyricism while still making it easy to digest and understand. Lupe does not do that well, which makes him a less effective lyricist.

Lupe on this album lyrically is the same problem i had with Ab-Soul on DWTW. too coded and deep to the point where it gets annoying occasionally.

i wrote too much for this to be posted on your status @Tyler , so here's my argument as to why TPAB is superior to T&Y.

nah. i disagree. recently revisited TPAB the other day and tbch its easily Kendrick's best album. lyrically its just as dense and layered as T&Y imo. i could sit down and analyze TPAB song by song it would take me days to do so each song is filled with entendres and double meanings and they arent hard to pick up on in comparison to Lupe's work (Lupe's lyrics are also fantastic but take more coding and aren't as immediate, which in my opinion is sometimes to the album's detriment). production is stunning throughout, and conceptually T&Y relies too much on the backwards theory (that Lupe himself hasn't even acknowledged) for it to be considered a better concept for an album than TPAB. TPAB also has better vocal performances from the lead rapper. Lupe is amazing, but Kendrick plays around with so many sounds and styles on TPAB. from spoken word and free jazz to boom bap to dancey beats to straight mothership funk, TPAB is just so much more creative sonically. T&Y has great production but it isn't as inventive or creative. you coul make the argument that Kendrick is just pulling from old sounds and thereore isnt being as inventive and creative but imo he takes these sounds and elevates them to a whole new level with the things he doing on this record. there's also not a single song on T&Y that has the level of emotional weight as a song like "u". not saying that every project needs an emotional song, but that song beats out any song on T&Y outside of Mural in my opinion.

no slight to Lupe or T&Y, i love that album alot, but TPAB is just so much better in almost every facet. also GKMC is not as good as TPAB.

@Packman to be fair I haven't listened to it since it came out, but man, post-Lasers Lupe I just cannot get behind. It's like @waste was saying--it's just so pseudo-intellectual. Lasers isn't great but it's not bad in the same way as f&l2 and t&y. I wasn't a fan of the production other than a few songs either.

I liked his first two albums though. Maybe I'll take another listen but I just remember it being awful.

we arent talking about first listen. Kendrick's album takes multiple listens to understand everything too, but Lupe's is so complex to the point where it get's annoying and in the way of the music. some of these lyrics just sound like a bunch of random phrases put together until i look up its meaning on genius where all these nerds are writing essays about one couplet.

its just not my taste. id rather understand what someone is saying on the first couple listens than sit around listening to it 15 times tryna figure out every single nuance.
