    Partly, I don't think this is really "unpopular"... the point of view in itself isn't widespread, but the point that hip hop doesn't have to be lyrical is pretty common.

    Anyway, nothing in art needs to be a certain way. Still doesn't mean lyrical hip hop cannot be better, though. You can't simply say prime Nas is no better than one of the rookie emcees from the 70s simply because "hip hop doesn't have to be lyrical"; an association football player doesn't really need to know how to dribble in particular ways, but it doesn't mean extra dribbling abilities don't make him a superior player to the "old school" players.
