Jul 12, 2018 A. i'm not sure why you're so seethingly, hysterically mad at me all the time - what did i do to you, lil guy? B. you're conflating me with other pitchfork writers C. pablo should not have been a 9 (it's closer to a 7) but ye should not have gotten a 7.1, it should have gotten, like, a 4. if you think there's not a massive drop in quality between the two albums, you're fooling yourself.
Jul 12, 2018 Still waiting on @Big Cuntry to explain why Fantano is fine at reviewing everything except for rap music. The only reviews I've really cared about for awhile now are Fantano and DEHH because they give me two ends of the spectrum when it comes to analysis on something and , imo, do it in a way that's enjoyable and easy to understand. And if I don't agree with what they say I never come out of a video upset or confused as to why they felt this way about something.
Jul 12, 2018 Another reason why Fantano has leap frogged p4k (not just my opinion the numbers speak for themselves) is consistency it's one mind in all of his reviews opposed to p4k who one review is feminist Susie or whoever and the next liberal Leo. It's a joke that these reviewers factor their views on things completely unrelated to the music into the reviews and the numbers speak for themselves
Jul 12, 2018 With video games it's different, it's more tangible to describe quality so if IGN gives something a 6 then I'm going to skip that game for example.
Jul 12, 2018 I never ever in my life have read music reviews as a means to decide whether or not I was gonna listen to an album. Like @Mike Tyson said I might read a video game review because that's a $60 investment, and I'll look at the consensus on rotten tomatoes when deciding between movies to see in theaters, but other than that I'd never read a full review of any piece of media before I watched/read/listened to it unless it was something I had no interest in consuming in the first place. I try to not even read opinions on twitter or forums because I like to go in with only my own expectations (or lack thereof). People here always complain about how reviews "never talk about the music" and I've never understood that because the context, culture, and history surrounding any piece of art is an important lens to read it by and if you're thinking critically about art at all you can't really remove the context from it. What do yall even mean when people say "they don't talk about the music"? Do you want them to talk about chord progression and music theory? I don't get it.
Jul 12, 2018 uh yeah i'm way f---ing better than fantano, as are a good two dozen rap critics working today.
Jul 12, 2018 I never said he was fine at reviewing everything besides rap because I haven't listened to him review much non-rap. It's not really at the top of my list to dissect fantano videos but the next time I watch one I'll let you know.
Jul 12, 2018 so if young thug is so great—why is he so polarizing? If someone is really good at something....it seems like the praise would be more clear cut/unanimous.....rather than 50/50 which is clearly the case when talking about Young Thug
Jul 12, 2018 fantano is a terrible rap critic because his understanding of rap falls somewhere between carson daly and tipper gore
Jul 12, 2018 Not asking you to dissect his videos it's just every time his rap reviews are discussed and you dismiss I ask why/how is he unfit or not good at reviewing them and you say you'll make a thread about it
Jul 12, 2018 I’ll put it another way, rappers like jay z and Nas aren’t polarizing. They are widely viewed as some of the best hip hop artists and for the most part....people who listen to hip hop would agree that they’re great Young Thug isn’t like that. I know lots of people who think he sucks
Jul 12, 2018 no, I said that I would make a thread one time when we got in an argument over it and now you tag me every time someone talks s--- about fantano waiting for me to write you an essay about it. if you want an example of good criticism read this article: https://theoutline.com/post/3359/chief-keef-influence-essay?zd=1&zi=uu3twain and buy this book: https://twodollarradio.com/products/they-cant-k----us K I'm starting his ye review right now
Jul 12, 2018 avant-garde artists who push a genre or medium forward are nearly always, in their time––and especially at first––polarizing. go look at what people wrote about ATLiens in 1995 and compare it to what they say about outkast today. to take your example: compare the contemporaneous It Was Written reviews to the retrospective ones.
Jul 12, 2018 I don't ever remember arguing with you fam but you're obviously upset so that's fine save me the essay I just wanted to know why exactly you feel that way about his reviews but I can live without it
Jul 12, 2018 When it comes to a popular artist, let's say, J. Cole, what are the parameters for reviewing that artist? Like, he puts up huge numbers and the public views him as a GOAT, but he always gets panned in reviews. How do we judge something like that? Should it be reviewed in the scope of what the artist set out to accomplish, or should it be reviewed in how the writer views it? If J. Cole crossed off all of his checklist successfully how can a writer s--- on it? Like Cole's music is pure mediocrity, but he succeeds in what he set out to do, so shouldn't it be reviewed under that lens rather than that of the critics? Idk if I'm really putting what I'm thinking into words coherently lol, but it has me thinking.
Jul 12, 2018 I think this younger generation doesn't like to read anymore. Give em a review in Youtube format, or better yet, sum it up in a meme, and they'd prefer that.
