Dope freestyle. Did he produce that?

J Cole continues his iffy neoliberalism on this. Not as bad as Big Sean did on that YG song though. I miss when rappers were talking about killing cops tbh.

I really miss the old days of mixtapes being released all the time between albums. Most the time, the mixtapes were better because they didn't have to produce label requested songs. Also miss all the remixes and collabs, the remixes that would have like 8 different artitsts on them. You really had to hold your own in the mixtape game back then. Now a days, you just have to release a 20 minute, 7 track album and be called GOAT...I don't get it. No one attempts 300 bars anymore. This is something Cole needs to do to really cement his GOAT status, if you ask me. Release more quality material more often proving you can do more than just be in album mode.

Hopefully this is more like his mixtapes. His albums don’t touch those.

Well, I was mainly pointing to the new fashionable way of flaunting wealth that him and Big Sean both took part in with name dropping Teslas and space travel and bitcoin and dumb s---.

His verse about taxes on KOD was more libertarian leaning in its insistence that the rich should dictate how public funds are spent. Of course, that happens all the time with figures like Bill Gates who people wouldn't associate with the Koch brothers who are the face of the libertarian ideology.

Also, his bit about the opioid crisis and the shifting tone in coverage now that it's a drug epidemic that effects white people is kinda clumsy. It does criticize the media class effectively, but it doesn't really promote solidarity on a shared circumstance across the racial divide. Instead it's more like "why should I care? you didn't care when it was us?". Kinda like when Jay Z gets on his black nationalism stuff. Both ignore the systems that breed inequality and what not. They just want that system to have their people on top.

@Charlie Work Still disagree with you on the libertarian tax thing. He mostly criticizes how taxes are spent, not that he has to actually pay taxes. He brings up how poor communities don’t get enough school funding. He wishes more would go towards poorer schools. Libertarians don’t want to pay any taxes whatsoever. They don’t give a s--- if schools are under funded

I didn’t get the impression that Cole just dismisses the opioid epidemic’s impact on white folks. He’s just pointing out that it’s in fact getting more coverage and concern from politicians and the media than the crack epidemic in the 80s. He’s not saying screw white folks

I've had this convo before, and I'm not interested in rehashing it. Cole's ideal tax system is that in which we rely on the benevolent rich to dictate public spending. That's his proposed solution in that verse. It's bad lol.

I gave him that much in denouncing racial hypocrisy through a media lens, but I think it's clumsy because it's fighting s-----y callousness with s-----y callousness. It's taking the "white girl in the well" expression and applying it to a very real situation in which millions are suffering, regardless of race, that just feels ill considered and impotent. The solution isn't "ignore anybody in a well".

But I guess he wears thrift store clothing and not name brands so I gotta love his politics lol

@Charlie Work I dunno, man. I think you’re assuming the worst case scenarios when it comes to certain things he states. We’d have to sit down with him and get into specifics. He doesn’t clearly state he wants the rich to dictate everything related to tax policy. He is not pleased with where his taxes go...from past interviews and songs he’s against corporate greed. He even pointed out how he’s against gun manufacturers (rich) donating money to politicians.

    Agree to disagree!

I think a system were 50% of tax money spending is decided by the government and the other 50% people can choose which sectors there money gets spent on would be a good system. Government can make sure the essentials are covered and the people can decide what things they care about most and want to give more money to. I dont think what cole was saying was a concrete plan just an idea he had to put out there stop trying your hardest to look for things to critisize. Plus he never said the rich should decide he said he feels we should be able to decide where the money goes that could go for everyone so we all have more of a say.
