Our idea was to extend the blanket of intimacy offered by VR beyond the once-in-a-lifetime ride with Marshall and introduce you to a more mystic version of Detroit you could never see for yourself,” said Slain. “We wanted to take the ‘reality’ out of VR and cook it down into something more unreal, but also truthful.” “Our studio has a history of using technology to tell stories in new, more immersive ways, to create experiences that are at the convergence of the intimate and the extraordinary,” added Felix & Paul Studios co-founder Paul Raphael. “‘Marshall From Detroit’ is a sparkling expression of that, inviting you on a surreal ride through Detroit with Eminem himself.”

Jan 26, 2019 In Marshall From Detroit, Eminem — whose real name is Marshall Mathers — shoots the breeze with old pal Sway Calloway, while we listen and watch. The 19-minute piece is intercut with moody nighttime images of Detroit. “There are two stars in this show: Marshall and Detroit,” said Raphaël. “We really wanted to create a connective tissue between these two entities. “Detroit is a troubled city and Marshall is a troubled person. He has dealt with that through art, and art is also playing a part in the resurgence of Detroit.” Lajeunesse and Raphaël found the perfect co-director in Caleb Slain, who hails from Grand Rapids, Mich., knows Detroit well and is a longtime Eminem fan. “I’ve seen every interview that exists with him,” Slain said. “He’s a hometown hero, where I grew up. For me, as someone who has watched his career closely, it was a chance to create a space where people could see a different side of him.” Eminem is almost unrecognizable at first — neither brooding nor angry, sporting a light beard and reflecting openly on whatever comes to mind. When it came to Detroit, Slain used creative flourishes to bring the imagery into a dreamlike realm that enhances the free-ranging conversation. “I call it unrealism,” he said. “It’s not literally surreal, but there’s enough wrong with it to allow room for spatial poetry. The beauty of it is in not being sure; that’s where the ideas and the experience loosen up.”
