I love this Stockholm love abuse relationship kanye has with his fans. He knows he f--- them in the a--- and they know they are getting f----- in the a---. But they still want a new background music while the f---ing is taking place831's Finest, Ordinary Joel, The Mandalorian and 9 others like this. -

I'm honestly not sure if I think this is better or worse than Ye, but they both suffer from the same problem: clearly rushed albums made from reworks after a previous album was scrapped. There are some interesting sonic ideas here, and some of the uses of choir vocals and things like Ty Dolla's contribution are excellent, but almost everything feels undercooked. Nothing is given time to breathe, and the lack of a centerpiece really hurts this. A lot of talk was made about Kanye's 7-track project run last year, but at the end of the day they still felt like albums; whereas here the short track lengths make it feel more like an EP compilation, cohesive subject matter and Gospel tone notwithstanding.
The writing here is also really basic, and was clearly last minute. The "chick fil a" bit is a new level of corny, even for Kanye, and some of his religious language feels forced and clumsy (i.e. the use of "Indoctrinate" on Closed on Sunday, or the forced "is free indeed" on Selah that clearly doesn't match the established flow). And the verse on Water is emblematic of the rushed approach here. He's already proven he can do a 'spoken-word' type verse that's more poetic on tracks like Lost in the World, but it's clear that he either didn't take the time to really write something great/profound or that he thinks that this is at that level (which is even worse).
I don't hate this, but I am disappointed. Kanye's clearly found a singular direction/vision, but it still hasn't helped focus him. And as somebody who is deeply religious and hopes Kanye's experience with Christianity is genuine, it saddens me that Life of Pablo may be the last time he made something great.

You know how in Kanye interviews he will drop a reference to a historical figure or event and you just know he read about it once and put no further thought into the details, beyond how it could apply to HIM? Like when he's preaching about, say, Walt Disney without indicating that he knows anything about Walt Disney? That's this album, except with Jesus. He has gravitated to religion for whatever reason but it isn't clear he's done much thinking about why religion is right for him or what it all really MEANS. So we're left with surface-level, smiley God-is-good bs. I don't know where he sees the power in this message or who he thinks it's resonating with. I haven't figured out whether it's slimy opportunism or if he's really "found God" but is failing to articulate it in an interesting way, but either way, the end product...sucks.
I see this as easily his worst album - at least with Ye I saw glimmers of greatness in Ghost Town and No Mistake. Here there is absolutely nothing I want to latch on to. Nothing.andy.cooper, asvdawg, Ordinary Joel and 8 others like this. -
